Whipped this up this morning, figure I can build for cheap. Please critique my design and not the quality of the lumber I used (old concrete form) or my poor photography skills. I will build them out of 3/16" thick tubing. And spray them Black.

And here it is just clamped to my jeep. Will be mounted to frame and pinch weld in several spots.

Image

Note: The steel version will stick out 1/2" further than the lumber I used to mock up which was 1 1/2" X 2". I anticipate the number one suggestion being to add a third member in the center to the frame. Other than that any suggestions before I do the take off and buy the steel?

Any input is appreciated.

Add a 3rd member (heh, heh, did he say member?) and it'll work fine for you.

OK guys, that's great. Due to the angle of the frame to the pinch body seem the third "woody member" would be like 9-9 1/2 inches long. I may add one, but really don't think it is needed with the thickness of the steel and 6-8 bolts through the pinch seem, do you? I'm talking for moderate wheeling, not banging the living crap out of them.

Time will tell, I suppose. But AllJs with support the weight of the vehicle without bending...

IMHO - I think your tie points are too near the ends. It would be fine if you were going to add a third, but as it is now, dead center looks like it would add a lot of stress to your bars. May be fine for light to moderate wheeling though...

I'd make to more arms at an angle that meet up to form a 3rd mounting point in the middle. Start the angles near the 2 arms you already have on the rail side and forma 3rd plate on the frame side.

Have them do double duty. Add another bar and it can act as a step. Hopefully they turn out well, hey you gotta start somewhere.

Looks good. I would add some rocker protection in the form of some 1/4'' thick tube (or something like that) that sticks up and out about 5" at about a 20 degree slope toward the bottom of the door. Obviously stop it before it keeps you from opening the door. Some paper towel tubes might be good for a mockup....

I've got the Rocky Road sliders -- only two mounting points. They are made of solid hitch bar and I haven't had any problems in 20k miles.

bugnout....is that 20k miles offroad or 20k overall? Mileage means nothing. It is what you are doing during those miles that matters. All it takes is the first obstacle on a trail to ruin the day.

You mean like the Skink Sliders from Rock Lizard?
Image
Except you'd make the angles go in toward teh uniframe instead of out toward the rails.

Cowdogg, I've got some All-Js bars on mine, if you wanna look at 'em just let me know. I'm free Saturday til the late afternoon and I'm running Walnut Canyon on Sunday.

First I'd like to thank everyone for the input. After hearing the suggestions made by moose, nolakj and seeing what sini built, I made a new mock up:

Image

These would prove to be a little more challenging to build but I like how they turned out:

What do ya think?
