Think I'll make my box a one piece. It would be 43" wide and 13" high. The MXT should shrink down enough to fit cross ways. If I want the box out I'll lay down the back seat, pick up the box, move forward a little and turn it length wise and out the back. I might make it out of cardboard first to try it out. Better safe than sorry

Well, my metal detector doesn't fit in the box but, everything else does. I considered making it as one box rather than two but thought it would be real awkward to put the box in and to remove it when neccessary so, I went with the split too.

As an added bonus, the extra height of the boxes makes it very convenient for loading groceries. Just, pop open the rear glass and set them in. No need to open the tailgate. The wife really likes that feature.

It sure is nice to have things like jumper cables, tow strap, jack & jack board, compressor, receiver hitch and tools always available but out of sight and out of the way.

I just thought of something. What if you cut a "U" shaped opening on the sides of the boxes where they meet? The shaft of your detector would go into the "U" cut and presto...it's stashed away! What do your think?

I have mine almost finished. All that is left is the outside stuff. I'm going to Home Depot for the self adhesive carpet squares to cover it. I have the piano hinge on it, putting brass corner protectors on, brass handles and some kind of a brass latch to keep the lid closed. Home Depot has a latch with a built in combination lock! Maybe :D

When it's all done I'll post some pictures.

Terry ~ Did you end up cutting the slots for your metal detector or go for a single box?

It's a Viair 480c. Get em off eBay. WAY cheaper.

I like it a lot. It charges a 3gal tank from 0-200 PSI in under 5 minutes.

Finished storage box. Both of my metal detectors fit in just by taking the shafts off.

Lookin' good. I'm sure happy with mine. It's nice to have all the gear along but out of sight.

Just barely fills 2 up from around 20 PSI to 38ish in about 2 minutes before it kicks on at the 165 tank pressure threshhold. takes about 4 minutes for the other 2 with the compressor running.
