rear differential skid plate?

Is there a reason to have a skid plate on the rear differential? oh and just want to make sure... i have an '05 renegade and i am pretty sure i have a dana 30... if i am wrong, please correct me! Thanks!

I haven't heard of a skid plate for the rear diff. If you think you might hit it (or have already) you may want to get a rock ring. This will keep the diff from peeling off if you drag yourself over something.

Not sure on the dana. You can go to either a dealership or Jeeps's site and request a build sheet that tells you everything your Jeep came with. But someone else will probably jump in and answer it quicker.

I am almost positive all KJ rearend's are Corporate 8.25's. The only Dana 30 application I know if in use is for the front axles.

here are some that a buddy has on his TJ and he loves them. You end up loosing about 1/2 inch but he says its worth it.

Correct, you need a rear rock ring or diff guard for a Chrysler 8.25 rear diff.

Rock Lizards rear diff cover would probably also be a good idea. It's not a Skid or Ring, but 1/2" steel is gonna make the diff a whole lot stronger.

I have that one on my XJ 8.25 but it isn't as nice as the less expensive one you can get from Rock Lizard and he supports the KJ and our site.

Seriously consider giving him a call and buying the one he offers. :wink:

I have the Blue Torch one and have banged it many times, but you would never know it by looking at it. However, I would have bought RL's over the BT's if it was available at the time. I would say its a comparable strength, but cheaper and the drain plug is an added bonus.

You can have it powdercoated but I'd just paint it so you can see where/when you're hitting it. Of course the best protection is to never hit and just find a way to manipulate the pumpkin "around" an obstacle from the driver's seat. Paint it fresh BEFORE you go on a trip, then inspect it after to see the hit marks... then just REPAINT it and try NOT to hit it.
