Fuel Storage: Hitch Cans

'Hitch Cans' is a receiver mounted rack that allows you to carry two 5-gallon fuel cans while allowing access to the rear door. From behind, the vehicle lights and license plate area remain visible.

Since we have permission to make these, does anyone know a fabricator that could turn these out in enough quantity to make it worth it to purchase some? Since they basically fold up and are individual pieces, they should fit into a relatively small box for shipping. Also w/o the cans the weight shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Anyone?

If your shop can't do it, my buddy can. He is set up to do it on a made to order basis. Price would be materials (including Jerry Cans and store bought hitch extenstion) plus shipping...PM if interested...

My only question/concern is how far does this extend your hitch and decrease your departure angle? I built one similar for use both as a gas can carrier and as a cargo rack. It works very well with two execptions, 1 I can't open the swing gate. 2 Departure angle is fine for on road use but very sad for off-road. I've included a link I'm new to the forum so I hope it works

I looked into it at the shop I work at. It looks really cool but is impractical for offroad use due to a decreased departure angle. If you want I could build it but I really don't feel it's a great idea. The design is looks very sturdy. The hitch extension will hurt your towing capacity and the departure angle mentioned above. Neat idea though.

I looked into mounting a gas can on the spare tire mount with a spare but I fear the tail gate won't hold up to all that weight (i have 255/70R16's which weight 20 pounds more then stock and it already makes the gate rattle). The weight of the tire plus a 5 gallon Jerry can would be too much. I forget how much gasoline weighs per gallon. I think it's in the neighborhood of 6 pounds or so. That an extra 30 pounds plus the mounting hardware. I hate to say it but we may be SOL for a practical off road untill Rock Lizard's Komodo Dragon rear bumper comes out.

If you want the hitch cans bad enough I will look into pricing though...if you want it PM me otherwise I will assume you aren't interested and I won't work on the idea any farther.

I wasn’t trying to discourage anyone from using them I use mine all the time for camping but I remove the setup before going to any extreme. I also use it when I make my cross country runs, tend to drive through the night and sometimes there isn’t a gas station open so the 10 gallons helps a lot.

1st I have seen of this and I like the looks of it too. More for water when camping than gas but you could always have spare cans around for whatever you needed at the time. Blue cans for water and red for gas!
