Post subject:  $29 Roof Cross Rails
So I got my $65 cargo basket on eBay, and I did not want to wait for the mopar rails. I went to the local electrical supplier, and picked up a length of strut pipe. It is the stuff that they hang from ceilings and suspend pipes and conduit from.

Each pipe bracket is rated at 1650# capacity. I figure they'll hold up to 100# on the roof. Still have to bed line them, but they are galvanized so they'll withstand a bit of weather before leaving rust blotches on my lid.

Roof setup so far has cost less than $100 roughly. Now I just need a stretchy net. Plus, it offers me a bunch of hook points. What do you think? I reefed on it, I know you all are afraid of things flying off a car, but I really trust this setup.

Nice setup. Worked out really well for a great looking, low cost rack.

I was going to follow this path. Would have cost me about $200 canadian, but I ended up buying a Mopar rack.

The page says that it weighs 38#, but the UPS tag says 25#. I believe the 25#.

That setup looks great. I used unistrut for my crossrails as well but mounted them with U-bolts. For strength, you can't beat this setup. The strut will hold much more weight than the roofrails. I found that I had to move them back and forth and play with the location a little to eliminate the wind noise at certain speeds but now its not a problem. Looks much better with a rack up there, nice job.

Do you think you could reverse mount it and it still be strong. Have the rails below the stock roof rails so the basket sits down between the stock roof rails...very low profile. I know it is probably stonger the way it is but it might be strong enuff the other way.

I thought about that, but my rack is too wide in the rear. The stock rails are only about 38" between them in the rear, spreading to about 42" in the front. The basket was just too wide.

Trim the ends back some and paint it black and it will look sweet. I think Darbys idea of setting it down below the rails would work and look cool too. The unistrut would make a great way to cheaply mount up some off road lights too.

Nice Job on the rails ! I also have te same setup ,but I'm using the 1 1/4 in. ones and are 60 in. wide . I carry bikes and lumber up there w/ no prob.
I plan on putting some lights up there someday along with a basket

I like it! For now I use the rails that were inside the Renegade roof basket and the clamps that were included to mount it. I carry my M.O.A.B. basket on them + at least 100lbs. of camping gear. It works well and the rails are actually quite similar to the Kindorf strut you have there, without all the mounting points.

i had the exact same set up in mind, although, i wanted to get PVC coated unistrut with no holes....kinda hard to come by, and around $75 a length.
seeing yours, i may begin the hunt again! btw, the PVC coating, also know as Ocal, is a nice dark gray color. the straps also come PVC coated, makes a nice, clean, rubberized finish. and yes, i'm an electrician.

i installed this setup with u-bolts and bolted a 1/2" thick plywood to it to temporarily carry odd sized gear. It is great. This past saturday i picked up a wide format printer (86" long) Had to drive through some woods and extract it from the shop through a second story window. Point of this is... printer 195lbs + me 220lbs + rails and plywood 35lbs total weight = 450lbs on the stock libby rails. It held up with no problems! While i was standing on the roof with the printer on it, the c-channel only deflected about .25" and sprung back strait when unloaded. There are 2 grades of channel you can get at home depot. the photos above and mine are the thinner guage, if i remember correctly its 14g the thicker is 12g and weighs almost tripple.

hey guys i will be doing this set up as well.i am however going to paint then black.do you think i could just clean them real well and spray ,or would i have to do some sanding?

It would be nice to cap the ends or coat them with something too to keep blood inside your body. It's bet inside I think. :roll:

well mine is done.24 bucks.not bad.the rack is on order from ebay.my neighbor works with this stuff alot.he said even if you paint them they will rust eventually.true?
