so I went and bought the steel today to try and make me some rock rails. I priced out a few different sizes.

2x2x1/8 was $4.63 a foot
2x1x1/8 was $3.01 a foot
1 1/2x 1 1/2 was $2.21 a foot

The place I went to told me that the big difference in price is because whatever they pay for the steel when they buy it is what they charge the customer (with markup of course) so if they have an unpopular size that has been sitting in the yard for 3 years, you are paying the price from 3 years ago.

I decided to go with the 2x1 which cost me about $61 after taxes and cutting fees. However, they actually gave me 2x1 1/2. When I saw them cutting it I thought it was the wrong size but I didn't want to say something and be wrong and look like an idiot. When I got home though, I measured it and sure enough wrong size. Oh well, I can live with it.

So next step is to measure, measure again, cut and weld... I will post pics when I finish.

thanks. I didn't think too many folks would be too keen on the color but I like it and the wife likes it so it will work for now. Just spray can for now but once I've seen it on for a while and decide if I really like it or not I will probably take them and have them proffessionally painted.

Thank you. Yes, I used a 110V HF flux core welder. Just made sure to take my time and let it burn in. First time I have welded in about 20 years so had to grind a couple down and do them again until I got back in the groove.
