I'm thinking of making a heat shield for my intake. Right now I have a K&N filter connected to the stock hose, and the filter is placed inside of the airbox. At first I figured the airbox has a little snorkel that would send the cold air into the filter, but I think I can get a little more out of my setup. Here's a link to an Audi forum with a write up that I want to use to make my own. I'm open to suggestions before I do it, but I think that this link pretty much sums it up

Menards sells a mylar insulation that looks like silvery flat bubble wrap that i have used at work to insulate pipes.I also used it to insulate the battery in the S10 that I gave to my daughter in Gunnison Co. glued a couple 12 watt 70 degree F heaters made a wrap for it works great. The material has no fiberglass cuts nice with a scissors takes tape perfectly. I thought about doing the air box and pipe in the XJ then testing air temp with and without. But no time.

K&N makes a heatshield thats included with their FIPK kit. Maybe you could contact them to see if one can be sold outside of the kit. never know, just thinking outloud. They might have a replacement shield for those that have the whole kit already.

Well I thought of that, and they wouldn't give me one unless I could send them the UPC or a receipt to prove that I bought it.

And as far as the insulation, I just want to use whatever will give the best heat resistance. Whether its fiberglass or mylar or anything else. Who would know about this?
