SKID PLATES (pics added!!) (more pics pg2 1/18/08 FINISHED!)

has anyone fabbed there own skid plates?? i am a welder so i sould be able to make my own.. just wanted to see if anyone had some pics and deminsions i could gets some ideas from.. i really need to know where to mount everything. i treid to order a set from my local jeep dealer and for some reason they said they couldnt get them???? i have an 03 sport.. please help befor i break something.. im a poor college student and have a new baby so i cant bye aftermarket stuff at this time...

Didn't Jeger do some too?

You shouldn't have a problem fabbing up a set with your welding skills. There's just a couple places where you want to make holes (oil drain, exhaust clearance, etc.) Get some pics and post 'em if you do!

Yep I believe he did too. Not too hard...make a template out of cardboard..fit it to the bottom crossmembers...weld away. Like snowsport said...post pics!! Homemade stuff is always great to see.

so your going for the hillbilly armor. well fro my experience on a HMMWV i know as long as your not cutting things or welding directally onto things you should be fine. Just dont go crazy with the additions(IE solid plate from bumper to bumper) you jst might have to add a mounting brackethere or there to reach good anchor locations.

I will defiantly add some pics when im done but I think I will have to put it on hold till Jan due to finals. thanks for the help everyone. (and ill post pics of my sliders when they are done as well) im not sure its hillbilly armor im sure they will be stronger than the stock jeep ones lol. just cause im from TN doesnt make me a hillbilly

ok so i should be finished tomorrow i just started with metal i had laying around and went from there. i didnt use card board although i would recommend it to anyone that doesnt have a ton of fab. exp.. just a few latst min changes and then time to bolt up

(after paint i guess). i hate to paint i just did my rear diff today while i was changing the fluids and i suck but it turned out ok for what it is.. anyone know what size bolts i should use i picked up some 5/16th 4" long but im thinking they will be to long i didnt have time to measure for that today... so pics comming soon and if anyone wants dementions let me know befor i bolt it up

5/16 sounds a bit light to me. I'd want to go with 3/8 at least. The bolts that came with the superskid 1 were 1/2" I think. 4" might be a hair long, maybe 3 1/2"? You could measure to see for sure.

thanks for the advice

i figured 3/8 might be over kill with grade 8 bolts, but ill take the ones i got back after i measure the length.
how hard is it to get that cross member off? anyone know first hand? should i use air tools or can i get by with just a socket wrench. (i have both) and anyone know that bolt size(metric or SAE)?? a buddy of mine is borrowing most of my sockets

ok so here are a few pics i have with it off the jeep.. i still have a few things i need to change but this works till i can fix it.. let me know what u think. this thing is tough

befor i added the side walls to mount it, paint, or punched holes

after paint and test fit

ill add some more pics when i finish and of it mounted

it covers the transfer case (of course) and part of the drive shaft and the muffler. it goes from door to door and not bumper to bumper. its really strong though i can jack my jeep up from it. i have a few more mods to make now that i have had it mounted and painted i decided to change things :roll:

. but ill post some pics of it mounted when im done tweeking it

Years ago My 66 VW Dune Buggy had a hinge design so as to change oil or get at the belly of the Volkswagon engine or tranny. I suggest this theme be incorporated into our Libertys, easy access and armor plating what else could you ask for??? what I propose is a turtle like underbelly. That is painted with a Line-X or Rhino Liner sheath and a epoxy or such iner coating to repell leakes. this could be tied to our sliders just to make things more bullet proof. If any wish to contact me on this just PM me we could just creat a new company!!!

Take plenty of pictures and measurements, I'd love to try making one but I'm not a fab person so I'll have to take it to one of my friends to see if he can do it.
