ok so im going to start on my rock rails mon and they should be done by the end of next week. my question is will 20 ft of square tubbing be enough? i took some measure ments and i think it should be enough. i know 30 would but the palce im trying to get the metal from will only sell it to me in 20 ft sections. its 47 bucks for 20 ft of 2" square tubbing. i dont want to buy 40 ft when i might only use 5 ft of it. what is weird is i got 30 ft of square tubbing from them last fall to make a set of sliders for a Land rover. anyways ill post pics when i get them done. im thinking of putting a round tube on them for steps as well but might add them at a later date.

main rail 5 foot long, 3 legs ,with two at 12 inches each and one just a shade shorter so 16 foot should do it I would say for both sides  so with that you have enough for 3 legs for the next set

if you have extra you could always use it to reinforce the rails. can never have to much reinforcements! make sure to use a hardened metal. easier to weld a crack then to bend tubing back into place!

yeah thats what i came up w/ today for measurements. the thing is i want to make angles (making a triangle) from the end legs for added strength. this is why i didnt know if 20ft would be enough. like this to give u an idea of what im talking about
Image

ive also thought about making a triangle for the middle leg and have them connect to one plate this might just be over kill though. ill see when i get all this rolling on mon. maybe like this i guess (sorry im not that good at photoshop and its late!!)
Image
or leave the angles i cut out and make smaller angles from the center one??? if i have the metal ill try it. i think i have some 1 1/2 " tube left from making Land Rover sliders so this might work if i come up short.like this
Image
i think it looks better!!!

man you are fast, dont need anyone else , its a one man team!!I wouldnt think you would need the braces from the center leg but... it would be strong!!

lol yeah i guess i did make them kinda quick maybe (3 today)5-6 hrs is all i should have in them if i dont run in to any problems. i just dread drilling the holes in the jeep. takes one heck a drill bit. oh and yeah i mad a rear bumper for a Land Rover in about 11hr total thats design and all. i dont use templets just work with metal. (measure 3 or 4 times!!). this is what i love to do and hope to do it for the rest of my life. its almost as much fun as wheeling  check back tomorrow for finished pics.( wont have them mounted i dont think. but might if the better half will let me work on them when i get home and get some bolts from lowes.

so they are finished!!!! it took me another 4hrs of work on them today but they are finished. im very pleased with how they turned out and they are deff. strong. ill post pics here in a few but i wanted to share with u what about made me pass out today. on my way home i decided to pick up all the hardware to mount these babies up. when i go to check out i knew it would be high but 78 bucks was the total   . i got 24 1/2 bolts and nuts 16 3/8 bolts and nuts and 2 cobalt drill bits. the hardware cost more than the sliders cost me to make. this was a shock to me big time. im going to see if i can find this stuff any cheaper before mount these things up for sure. anyways back to the sliders ill get some shots up when i get the strength. i also plant to throw some primer on the and clean them up a little better.

ok so here are a few pics for u. i still need to sand blast them and paint them etc. but there done. i didnt use any slanted peices on the legs since after talking it over w/ my welding teacher decided it didnt need them and would just add weight. trust me they are stong. i will post more pics when i get them painted and mounted.enjoy! i am wore out after making them in 2 days. they look great held up to the jeep and i cant wait to get them on and bash them on some rocks!!

no drawings but i can tell u the specs off the top of my head the main rail is 2"x2" 5' long w/ the ends cut at 45* (facing downwards); the legs are 12"(front door); middle leg 11"; the last leg is 10"(under back door); the plates on the ends of the legs are 6"x3"(legs r welded to the bottom not in middle) the holes were punched out not drilled; the tube that runs along the pinch weld is 1"x1" and around 4' long. i welded it all with a MIG welder except i had to lengthen the tube for the pinch weld so i TIGed it. main tip i have is to make sure not to get it to hot and warp the rails. u can run the weld beads in opposite directions and i also clamped it to a thick aluminum table. i am more than happy to answer any questions that anyone may have.

yeah with the amount of bolts i used there is no nead for it. distributing the weight is the key there.
