| Post subject: | Rear Tow Point (Fab #4) pics!! |
ok so my buddy needed a rear tow point for his rear hitch on his Land Rover and asked me to fab him something up. since i had a little metal left from my sliders (2x2 tubing) i decided i would help him out. this was a very simple fabrication only took me an hr or so and it turned out great ( in my opinion). i capped off the end off the tube and the cut out a "D" like ring w/ a plasma torch and drilled a 5/8 hole in it. i welded it all together w/ TIG*stainless* ( i was a little rusty since i hadn't TIGed in a few months but is still strong and will hold.). i still have to drill a hole in the side of the tube but need to know where to drill it so ill have to mark it when i meet up w/ him. hope u guys enjoy and i will soon make myself one when i get a rear hitch. i figured i would let him paint it or whatever so its bare metal. now for some pics!!!! let me know what u think!!!

so i brought this over to him tonight and it looks great on!! very clean look. seems like it should be there from the start. he was very impressed an pleased. ill try to get some pictures up tomorrow of it on. i also think i might make a few small design changes when i make another one. here is what im thinking of doing. adding small triangles on each side
this will add alot of strength and will help if u have to tow form an angle. |

Those triangles should keep it from bending too easily and then ripping off. I would think that putting them on the ends and not the middle would be best though. Overall, two thumbs up. |

im assuming that u are talking about stick (arc) welding? this was done w/ TIG. its a little harder than stick but looks way better. and it really just takes practice to get good well and some God given talent i guess. ive had almost 1 1/2 years of college in this so ive learned alot trust me. u should have seen my first bead |

looks good, for added strength, I would have cut the d ring piece out first, t'd that with a piece to fit inside the tube, cut a slit in the end cap, pulled the piece through, and then welded the cap on, that way the piece would never break, and def not pull through the slit, with your design I'd be worried it'd break off. Looks good though. ps, rover man couldnt pop for a warn model |

ps, rover man couldnt pop for a warn model Also make the piece for the shackle out of 3/4"-1" steel so it can handle more load and not bend as easy from a side pull, never really seen and strait pull when offroad before.Just my 2 cents,it's your product. |

I like it. When I finally get a hitch, I just may have you make me one. I fully believe in supporting other members in their projects, even though I can't afford it yet. |

I was looking at a Warn model but yours looks more custom and at the very least, lighter. With a couple of mods as listed previously in the thread, I think it'll actually be better (if potentially slightly less heavy-duty since it's not a cast block). Keep up the good work! <edit> Just found this one on the warn site:
It's a 1-1/4 but the doubling-up on the tab might be a good idea to increase lateral strength. I predict that someone else will share the opinion in about 10 minutes |

How about making your a little wider, so the clevis doesn't have too much play. Similar to Warn's
