Post subject:  Prerunner style light bar
Took a break today from playing around with the fenders and decided to notch another project off the list. I didn't get it completely done yet but you get the general idea. Some support struts will attach from the top of the bar to another roof rail but that will be done in the next couple of days. Just something else different to chew on I suppose....

It all still needs to be taken off and painted but I think it looks pretty good... and I can't wait to finish wiring the 500's and go play!!! :twisted:

looks pretty good, but with that I could never get in the garage again. would have to put a lift kit on my rafters !! :lol: :lol: Always thought it would be good to fab one up that would lay down when not in use and then a quick connect in the upright position when you needed it

The way I bend the pipe is far from fancy. I just have a manual pipe-bender that can do up to 1" pipe. It's just a curved head with a long handle attached to it. Just that and a torch. (had a nice hydraulic one but it had to go before I moved)

If you are patient and double-check your work you can do just about whatever you need to with a manual one, it just takes a bit longer.

Oh I agree... I have actually put some thought into how one would go about building that. That setup just involved a little more time and effort than I was willing to put forth for a light bar. If you are really interested in building one we should talk as I have the basic concept drawn out and have all the necessary parts located. (you know you want to :twisted: )

OK here are your detailed pics thus far.... do take into account that things still need to be pulled off and painted/rubberized and some of the screws will be replaced with better hardware.

Here's the wiring setup in the back. The superstrut makes it about as easy as can be to do a clean job. I put the lights out on those plates to space them out from the electrical and make it easier to keep the wire routing clean.

Here's the installed switches inside... they are pretty cool with blue LED's in the ends when the power is on. I have it wired so that the outside two lights are on one switch and the inside two are on the other.

Looks great! I've been trying to figure out how I want to mount some.
Being an ex-electrician, I like the idea of using the conduit to build a roof basket/ light bar combo. Still ain't sure if thinwall will be strong enough for a basket yet though.

Are you going to paint it or powder coat it when you are done?

Hate to say it, but there is no Symmetry to the bends!
Other than that... What's the point? Do you "pre run" your KJ?
Not like a Kj could even compete in a Baja 1000 or A Dakar race!

What is that material that you are using? Copper tubing painted with Galvanized paint? Or Electrical conduit that won't stand up to any impact?

I like real fabrication of parts that actually work in an off road scenario! And not poser crap.

But then again, I'm only expressing my freedom of speech!

They guy should of kept it stock or invested some money and done a proper engineering job. Then he would of been able to sell some proper "flat fenders" for a KJ!
The owner comes across as being a teenager with no taste and the inability for real engineering skills.
What a waste of an otherwise nice Liberty.
Oh, and while I'm at it... With all the information on the internet, you'd think he could of done a better job of wiring up those lights!
That looks totally armature.
For a couple of bucks he could of bought some cheap convoluted tubing and hid the wiring at the very least!
Think before you do!
Look at the pro's and come up with something less expensive if you do not have alot of money. Nothing wrong with that
Over all, that KJ's "Fabrication" looks plain CHEAP and in a hurry.
If I saw that thing next to me at a traffic light, I'd laugh at it and the owner... Out loud!
I've seen better things done to a vehicle with less money.
That thing is just plain cheese.

First and only warning. If you feel that negatively about someone's ride, keep it to yourself. You are entitled to your opinion but the way you went about it is completely off base and wrong. A simple "I would have done it differently" would have sufficed. Send him a PM if you wanna give tips on how you feel to correctly mod a jeep.

Impressive, dug up a thread from 11 months ago just to rip it apart...

Like the design or not, If you wheeled you jeep, and have any lights on top, you would instantly see the usefulness of the bar up there. I'm tired of readjusting my lights after every excursion.

jeeps that get used lose parts every now and then, any attempt to prevent said parts from flying through fabrication is a worthy attempt, just at a quick glance, it would take little modification or rework to turn that prerun bar idea into what tom was talking about with the folding bar, could probably use the black plastic thumb screws from a folding gas grill

where did you get the green crossbars at?

I think that is electricians strut or something like that. In warehouses they use it to hold up almost everything from wires to pipes
