Well finally built a rear cargo shelf, was a lot easier than I thought and fits real well. Here are a few pics:

It is just cheap indoor/outdoor carpet from home depot, it was real easy to cut and fold around the wood. I would say it will hold around 50lbs, if I used a piece of metal pipe or conduit for the rear support I'm sure it would hold more, but I don't plan on putting a whole lot of weight on it so I'm not worried.

Yours looks very similar to the one I built, with the exception of the lip, and carpet (I bedlined mine). I used 1/2" pressed board, and a 5/8" dowel rod and it supports both of my pups on it (about 60 lbs total). Looks real nice, good job!

Go for it, I built it one day and then carpeted it the next, it really didn't take long at all.

What did you use to attach it to the rectangular black loop towards the front? Or did you just lay it on top and expect the wood broom handle to keep it in place?

The black loop is a metal "L" Bracket covered in electrical tape. And yes the wood dowel holds the shelf in place very nicely.

I used the measurements in the pic below that I found on another thread here:

I cut down from 17.5 to about 16.5 for the depth b/c it was a little snug.

The materials included:

1/2" press board
1x1's for the sides and rear
1x2 for the lip against the rear seat
3/4" dowel - most I found were cheap pine and were way to flimsy, but I found one made of hardwood at the depot, I may end up using a metal pipe
two metal "L" brackets to attach to rear seat latches
1.25" deck screws
indoor/outdoor carpet from the depot
outdoor double sided carpet tape
and a staple gun

Thank-You kind sir, this may just be my next project since my build sheet reflects some form of rear net or what ever. But having purchased used realized some creative Skull Sweat would be required. Up till now I have resorted to a fabric cover, Remenicient of a Scotch-Brite pad combined with the heavily tinted rear window. Keeps the inquisitive veiwer in the dark. This carefully designed addaption could be just what I have been looking for, an extended period of time. This could result in a rear cover for pennys on the dollar, comparied to others applications. :twisted: :D 8)

Not sure why, but my dimensions are inch wider on the length, and an inch shorter on depth (49" x 22.5", same 3" x 5" notch). Mine fits snug (have to give it a little pop to remove it), about an 1/8" gap on the sides and 1/2" gap at the rear corners by the tailgate.

I was going to say it was due to model year and the fact of the rear seats folding down flat, but it looks like you both have an `05-`07 model.
