I'm looking at cutting out my "coughing lung" stock muffler and letting the CRD breathe freely with a section of 2.5 inch pipe. I'm fairly mechanical but have never done exhaust work. I have some questions on the parts you can buy at your local Autozone/OReilly's/PepBoys, and how to use them.
- in a section of 18" 2.5" ID pipe, one side is obviously larger than the other so the upstream can be inserted into the downstream. To get that fit, is one end stretched or is the other compressed to make the delta in diameter? I'm hoping it's the former.
- If I cut the stock system before the exhaust/cat flange (to remove the flange weld constriction) and after the muffler step-up (again to remove the constriction), am I going to end up needing some kind of adapter? It's unlikely that I will just happen to cut where there's a taper that'll fit into my new piece, right?
- The only lengths of pipe I saw at the place near me are 18". To places carry longer lengths and if so, who?
- When I use a u-bolt clamp, do I need to put any kind of sealant (high-temp silicone or something) inside the mated surfaces to make a seal and also to prevent corrosion?
Thanks.
Dan
