Post subject:  My first MOD, mesh grill inserts
Ok, I started my first mod today. I got three of the four slots done before I decided to call it a day, its threatening to rain and I dont want to have it apart if it does. I decided I wanted to put some mesh inserts into the grill but didnt know what material to make it out of so I just started looking around home depot... didnt find anything I liked, looked around walmart and found a rubbermaid mesh trashcan that I thought would be perfect

I made a template from cardboard and began cutting the trash can up. Here is how it turned out with the three middles one inserted.. will do the outsides when I can.

After I get them all done, I was thinking about painting them a bright blue, then paint my hitch a bright blue.. any thoughts?

Might want to resize your pics down to something manageable.... nice score with the Walmart trash can though... I bet it'll look good.

most of the grill inserts I dont really like, just not something I am into , but I have to say that these do not look too bad

Thank you, they had a silver trash can as well but since the jeep is black, I figured I would keep them black until/if I decide to paint them the blue that I was thinking about. I saw the gutter gaurds that a lot of other people have discussed using but the mesh was too big and I just didnt like the look... this mesh was exactly what I had in mind.

Also, after cutting the mesh, the edges are pretty sharp and they grab onto the plastic of the insert as well. I had planned to get some black wire to tie them on with but they seem pretty secure without it so I will see how they hold up. I did have a little bit of trouble snapping the insert back in but not enough to worry me that something was going to break when I applied a little pressure.

I wish I had known and done this when my KJ was new... now there are so many bugs smashes, rocks, whatever else is in there, all on my ?radiator?!

Chill dude - I had read his post on my phone and wrote out my question and guess I didn't submit it or was not in signal until later in the day. When I had asked - nobody had asked yet. If you were so annoyed you should have just ignored the question. :wink:

I couldn't get my grill insert to come free and I wasn't wanting to break it, it was pretty stiff and stubborn, plus I wasn't sure If i wanted the screen infront of the inserts since I had painted the screening.

I cut ample screen, hung it from a ladder that I leaned against a tree and painted it with a rattle can of black cherry paint from advance auto. Once it dried I laid it across the grill and started working zip ties through the top where there were already holes in the grill insert moulding. Ran a few zips around the bottom and tightened everything down. I also stripped the paper/wax off of about 14 trash bag twisty ties and used those to tighten the mesh down between the zip tied sections.

I'm happy with it! Thanks for the idea and thanks to the KK section guys who have done it as well.

The idea for the color is something that I noticed about the radiator, under certain light angles and conditions, the radiator reflects back a copperish red color which I thought looked really cool. So I tried to duplicate that using you fellas grill screening idea. I'm not sure how it would have looked had I had it over the inserts, it may have turned out to be too overbearing since it was painted.
