Post subject:  Inner Fender (not plastic liner) Cut, Pound & Weld

Even though I removed the plastic liner my new tires were hitting a little on metal. Just past the pinch weld, on full lock in reverse. I talked to a friend of mine that works at a Chrysler dealership, in the body shop. I asked him what was directly behind that metal. He said that their is a space back there. It turns out there is a couple of inches in there! Shaped like this: I\

I took the KJ to the guy that installed the lift and explained everything to him and asked his opinion. He said that it wouldn't be a problem at all to fix!! Oh happy day! The bottom wall that you see in the picture went straight across to the pinch weld. He made a cut from a couple of inches down to the bottom, about an inch under, then over close to the pinch weld. He connected the cuts and removed the piece (see bold above). Next was to pound around the hole to push everything back. He then cut out a piece of flat stock metal he had, weld that into place. He also welded all over the pounded in area. Next he took a grinder and smoothed everything out. It feels like it was factory made that way. While I was outside he painted it black. No more hitting.

Next week he is going to do the other side. I'll take step by step pictures.

The white line is where the cut will be.

Here you can see the space behind the metal. It's a couple of inches deep.

After the area was pounded in he welded a piece of metal over the hole.
