Need to decide on a welder first. then a project. a front bumper is high on the list followed by a roof rack/basket/awning i've been think about for quite a while. and then there's armor and then ....
The class is split, half the class gets to start with oxy-acetylene and the other half, stick. All the youngsters were quick to jump for stick first, I was more than satsified to begin at the beginning.

I like stick and mig the best, but its something thats good to know how to do. but the lincoln 220 AC is a good and fairly inexpensive arc welder |

Oxy is mainly for brazing and cutting. Stick welding is good fro heavier, rusty metal...got an old 30-250 amp 220V given to me, been learning on it. The easiest to do is Mig, gives some good welds. If you master those and want to be a really great welder, learn tig...those are some beauitful and very strong welds. I did some little bracket projects first, then I built my son a 4x4 "red flyer" wagon, actually we only used the sterring and wheels, it now has some springs under it. Anyway, some welds looked good, others were garbage...still learnin'. My next project is rock rails/steps and a front push bar/light bar for the wife's new liberty. God luck and learn lots! |

I learned the expensive way at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) in Phoenix, Arizona. bugnout, I too would recommend a Lincoln. I have the Power Mig 255XT (230/460/575I) but that one is somewhat pricey. You can find good starter Lincoln's at decent prices. I hope you enjoy the training! It can be a lot of fun for some people. |

Good choice in skill to learn.I learned by practicing with a mig and some scrap metal.Nothing makes you prouder than a nice bead. Good luck with classes.Invaluable |

ya MIG is extremely easy lol even a caveman can do it (sorry I had to) but stick is great for all around welding thats needs some strength and TIG REALLY takes some pratice

I took welding in HS. Had to start with Oxy-Acetylene for the first year. Got pretty good at it and I really think it helped to understand what's needed to make a good bead, no matter what you're welding with. Unfortunately, I haven't used it since HS so I'd need a lot of practice to pick it back up, I think. |

Its a 3 credit class, at about $300 for three credit hours (Plus fees, registration, lab fee). Surprisingly the lab fee was on $35  i'm sure that I'll use way more than that in gas alone.

I am taking a materials processing class in school and i wil be learning how to weld too cant wait. Mig, Tig, and Oxyacetaline. Plus we get to play with plasma cutters too.

Progress, Mid term next week, project is to build a box from 14 1.5x3" plates. This is the one I did for practice this week. I would have passed, but too many bad welds to be an A.

This is all gas. After the midterm we start Stick. Next semester is MIG and TIG |

oxy? oh thats cool I never learned that one, I focused on MIG and Arc, and I didnt have time to try TIG. so have you made anything for you KJ? |
