OK I looked at several different ways when I got this cheap rack off of Overstock back in 2005 and this is what I came up with and its worked ever since so I never changed it
1) drilled 1/2 inch holes through the side rails (2) per side
2) had some 1/2 inch all thread laying here so ran it through the siderail, then through iron gas pipe ( like you use inside your home) then through the opposite siderail
3) install cap nuts on the outside of the rail to secure
I also cut the gas pipe just a little longer than the inside measurements so when I tightened it down it held good. Pictures are not good just went out tonight to get them inside the garage. I have had 3 245/75 MTRs up there on Moabs and it held plus I have stood on top of it so its pretty strong and low like I like it

the last one is of my air deflector I made out of heavy aluminum
The pipe going across is about 3/4 of an inch from the roof, and the rack sits as low as the side rails almost, which I like,
Simple way to do it and I have ZERO dollars in it , oh wait I have 3 bucks for the cap nuts on the ends

Its hauled a ton of stuff in the last three years, may not be as fancy as some but it just plain works 8)

and yes that is my "pet" Coyote hanging on the wall in the last picture, theres also a skunk hanging right next to him out of the picture!

Looks pretty good actually. My question for you is how high is your garage door? I dont think I would make it in my garage with a roof rack, lol. Then again I have a fairly new house in vegas and they half a s s everything here.

I have just 2 inches to go ( or a little less) thats the reason for it sitting low and then when I go to 265-75s here soon iI will have about 3/4 of an inch to go maybe

So you will never have your spare on there then and will just use it for cargo?

When I have went on long trip and needed the rear carrier I put the spare up on the roof and then chairs etc, everything else on the carrier, but no not for normal everyday running around I don't
Just don't ask about the long weekend we had, spare on the roof, late getting home and started to back into the garage  :x yep hit it

But I hope to move soon to somewhere that the garage door is not so low

just measured it and the door open is 81 inches, top of the rack currently is 79 1/4 so have some room to grow yet  265-75s here I come after the 4.10s go in

How much weight will the factory rails hold?

isnt it 150# for the sport models and 75# for the renegade models

Seems like it is the other way around. Aren't the sport rails plastic? I know the renny ones are metal, well the mounting points aren't but the rails are. I don't know either way though.

no the main bar is metal, and I pretty sure that the Rennie ones were weaker than the Sport or Limited

hmm, I always thought the sport were plastic. I wonder why the renny ones are weaker.

Rennys are weaker due to all the plastic parts, not sure how much mine will hold but I know I have had 2 MTRS on Moabs up there with my butt and it held, I held my breath but it held !!!

So the end caps/mounting points on the sport rails are metal?

Post subject:

no just the main tube running the length of the KJ is metal but the mounting and end peices are both plastic

Sounds the same as the Renny's rails. Still wonder why they are stronger. :?

Post subject:

is the main tube on the sport models bigger than the Rennies, maybe?? I dont know or maybe its the way it was constructed

I always thought it was smaller.
