Post subject:  Looking to make bumpers...

Hey all,

I'm thinking about designing and welding up some bumpers for my '03 KJ, but It is -15 out right now, and I'm not able to use my garage... I figure I can just draw the parts up now and have my brother do the assembly work. The only problem is that I have no clue about the mounting points used for the front and rear bumpers, and it's too darn cold and snowy (1.5 fee all around the jeep :D) to go out there and measure at the moment.

Does anyone have the measurements off hand for the mounting points? If so, that would be awesome... and I'll make a CAD template for the bumper and make it available to everyone. While I'm at it, if anyone has the dimensions for the mounting holes on the various skid plates, I can also draw up some CAD templates for those.

Thanks,
-Cody

try sending a PM to XC240 he made a front receiver hitch and I bet he has the front measures somewhere.

and for the transmission skid check here in the fab section, someone made one and it has the holes measured on it, and there are a couple other skid plates made.

front hitch:

also if you plan on selling a bumper or two I would suggest you make the bumper first and then sell it, dont ask for the money and then make the bumper

I see what you did there ;) :P

Back to the OP....

To remove the front bumper you have to remove the grill, pull out the pop rivets in the wheel wells, remove some rivets from the air dam, remove some funky Christmas tree clips near where the grill meets the bumper and finally disconnect the wiring to the headlights ( on drivers side of kj ). Do all that and you can pull the bumper off.
Taking the bumper off should be a 1/2 hour job... best bet to find what works for you is spend a Saturday pulling it off and then take measurements/photos to build off of.

I wouldn't weld to the front cross member... best to fab the bumper with mounts that fit into the uniframe and mount like a front hitch or backbone.
here's the install instructions for the Detours Backbone. Might give you some good ideas for mounting the front bumper...
