Matt400 wrote: Anyone else add back up lamps? Below is from the orginal questioning thread when we were planning the lights. I thought John's install was a cool option for those with out racks. Kugellager wrote: Below are several photos of my rear lighting system and a closeup of how I mounted it to the rear glass hinge covers. Basically what I did was to use a piece of sheet metal cut to the shape of the inside of the hinge cover as a backing and strengthening plate for the mounting bolt for the light. I also drilled a hole through the hinge cover, through the sheet metal and through part of the hinge to secure the rear lights. The plastic covers just snap/pry off. The lights are controlled by a single panel switch which activates a 30 amp relay to turn on the lights. They are connected to an auxiliary circuit panel by 14-gauge stranded wire with a 15 amp fuse for the lighting circuit. Click thumbnails to enlarge images. I was thinking of putting a set of these in a fog pattern under my bumper. I would stay away from mounting anything below the bumper if you take the KJ off road, its just begging to get ripped off unknowingly. |

It's nice to see different solutions to the same "problem", there is no 1 way to do it! Thanks to both of you for the posts! |

Kugellager the way your lights are hooked up the switch can disable the extra backup lights even when the jeep is in reverse? unless it is only a 2 position switch then it's on or on with reverse DId you use a 2 position or 3 position switch? |

No, the way it is set up the switch will not disable them when you put the vehicle in reverse. In order to do that you would need a seperate switch somewhere in line with the relay that feeds off of the backup light - probably from the feed/splice from the backup light itself. So you could place a second switch on the panel next to the first one or use a 2 position switch as you suggested. John ];') |

You can save a relay if you use this it works the same I used a single pole double throw sw with a safety cover mounted next to the power outlet in the rear cargo area that way Im not tempted to flash tailgaters at night and geta cop instead. By xc204 at 2009-02-02 |

Why would you want to remove that option? I need to be able to turn mine on while driving for the shelf roads in the mountains...and therefore need the switch/relay up front. John ];') |

Well I came back to this too late, I really like what John did so if/when my Hella Fogs get smashed I may do that but for now they are here and for 29.95 shipped I shoulda done it a long time ago, can actually see back there at night now.
I pulled the funky lens "O" ring and sealed with silicone cuz they looked like moisture was getting in there, all better now. For power to the relay I pulled from the rear accessory socket harness and they trip with the reverse lights. |
