Great write up! I did something similar a coupple months back. Tapped into the reverse wire on drivers taillight (lights come on with revers and off in all other situations - no switch) and used doubble stick tape to mount the relay behind the taillight lens (Heavy duty doubble stick tape thats for brass sign mounting on concrete walls...that baby is not gonna fall off!!! - from Lowes). I mounted small rear fogs right behind the rear tires. I soon installed some small mudflaps to protect the lights from rock damage. I chose that mount spot because it was low so I can light the ground under my trailer easliy for backing up, as well as not having any clearance issues. A SIGNIFICANT improvement for trailer backing seeing as my trailer is much bigger than my jeep (1/2 ton 8ft bed from an old chevy...great off road clearance :)).

I am looking to add a set of wide angle fog lights. I need something that I can tuck under the truck to light up the area right below bumper. I am not worried about the distance. Has anyone done anything like this?

I was hoping something like this:

And I found this, which I thought is pretty cool:

This, but too bad I am not lifted,

Here are some other ideas I found, especially I love the first one:

kapalczynski, I just saw your post above, it was on the 3rd page.. Which light is that? Do you have brand/part no? That looks just like what I was looking for, small, functional.

One thing to consider is if you want to light up objects like buildings and such behind you like headlamps would or the ground behind you or both.
If I were to do mine over again I would do what John did. The advantage of that location is the beam can be focused down on the area you want to illuminate vs out and back with an under bumper mount.
I have Hella FF115 work lamps on my pick up under the bumper and performance is awesome but they actually light up so well I often wonder in public if they are blinding. Mounted higher and pointed down would keep light from being shine to far rearward.

Matt,
As much as I like keugulager's setup, I can't say that I am fan of exposed wiring that leads to the 3rd brake light.
The other setup is much better, cleaner, it would be very nice to have a writeup and the wire routing to follow.

When it comes to illuminating objects, you are backing up, most of the time no faster than 5, maybe 10 miles per hour, in my case very slowly out of my garage, and the lighting in the shared driveway is not that great. So I need something that lights up down under, behind my tires and surrounding area, not far behind. With the lights up on the hinges, there isn't much illumination you will get on the ground, or immediately behind the jeep.

Look at this shot:

Just get floods instead of spots.

Drilling through for the wiring looks good, nice idea.
I still think higher is better cuz you will then be able to point them down. Try this for test... take a good high powered flash light and hold it down low moving it all around to see what it can do at that location then hold it up high for comparison, you might be surprised.

Does anyone know what are the brand/model of the lights kapalczynski used above, below his rear bumper?

i just have mine on my roof rack. two floods. work extremely well and i have them wired to plug in by the stock roof rails so when i take the rack off all you can see is a little rubber capped plug by the plastic rail cover.

I also wired my lights to the roof rack. The entry point of my wiring is a little different. my 06 came with SAT radio and the antenna is on the back of the roof. well I took it all apart since I don't use it and drilled a hole through the plastic cap that you see on top of the roof and ran the wires through that into the cab of the jeep. Little silicone and has been nice and dry, no new holes needed. best part is I can by the Antenna back if needed, I will take a pic when I can.

This is elsewhere on the site, but I just wanted to put it separately so It would be easier to read, understand and find.

This is how to set up a three (3) position switch.
One is to have the lights come on automatically when triggered by another power source, ie: reverse lights/parking lights.
Two is off all the time
Three is turn them on independently.

    On the Switch
  • One side goes to fused power
  • Middle goes to trigger post 86 on relay
  • Other side goes to what you want to tap into (ie: reverse lights)

    On the Relay
  • 30 goes to fused 12v power
  • 86 goes to middle terminal on switch
  • 85 goes to a ground
  • 87 goes to Aux Lights

This is the correct Diagram to use with the wires going to where I just mentioned.

These are the switches I used.

I think I have just found my next mod! Great write ups and wiring diagrams! I do 90% of my fishing after dark in the summer, which has me backing the boat dow the ramp at sundown and into the into the driveway anywhere from 3am to sunup. With my old F150 I would always just drop the tailgate when I backed in to get extra visibility. This should help out a lot since I cant do that anymore. I might do tractor lights, maybe just one in the center.

Anybody have the diode get really hot? I installed mine using the first diagram by sierra expeditions and when i tested it, the diode got very hot. I ended up taking it out because it seemed like it would do more damage than good. Has anyone had any issues with not using it?

All i want to do are add two fog lights to my roof rack....and this is the best thread ive found so far...

so to do regular fog lights (on/off switch only) with no reverse connections i just skip adding that wire connection right..?
