USAFCOP, are you saying that the roof flexed more than whatever rack you had on it, causing a mount to rip out? Interesting...

Yep, had the Garmin wilderness rack mounted to the factory side rails. Flexed the body enough that the plastic feet snapped and took the rear bolts and nutzerts with them. The roof is very thin where it mounts.

Took a couple nights off due to family requests...

Tomorrow we're going to finish all the parts & plan to weld on the weekend.

We bolted feet onto the fixture, and welded up a mock frame to connect them all. They fit on my roof like a glove with on-size bolt holes. We'll be oversizing each hole by a small amount, once I test fit my rack on some other people's jeeps.

Fixture is 95% done, finishing it tomorrow. All parts are cut, coped, and fit the fixture like a glove. We even suprised ourselves how well things are going together. Finally I'll have some actual pictures to show of a fabricated item in a couple days. We just need to saw some wood (? I know, right?) cut the side tubes on their funky angles, and weld it up.

Which rack are you doing?

We're building two of this rack. The first will ride my Jeep, and the second is homeless for now.

We're also going to build a custom version of the "nightmare" rack for a LOST member. Details still need to be finalized for that though.

So will you be selling the 2nd? Has a LOST member paid you, or wants to pay you to build the "nightmare? I am interested depending on cost of that 2nd homeless rack.

Boiler,

I've been following this thread. You've certainly got some skills. We're all anxious to see the actual rack. Keep up the good work.

Well, we're excited about it. I told the fab guy to call me today if he wanted to work on it. No call. I can't blame him though, we worked our jobs and this project from 5:30 am friday through 2 am saturday...all told I was up for 25 hours yesterday and enjoyed the recovery day today.

We're both really excited how well things went on this project and are eager to finish it. We'll take a crack at finishing tomorrow.

Update??

Sure why not. Well, we had a bit of a delay on the last part cutting. In order to cut the compound miter correctly, the tube had to pass through a portion of the motor on our saw. We could use a cutoff wheel, but we needed the bed of the saw to position the part correctly.

Wednesday night I designed four jigs to mark the cuts on the ends of the tubes, and we cut and built them thursday and friday. They worked like a champ and we got near perfect side tubes into the fixture at about 2 am on Friday. Saturday we recovered, and today we spent with our families for Easter.

The next 3 days my fab guru (Tony) is going to a welding conference, but its local so we may get some done in the evenings. We are going to tweak the jigs slightly, cut two new side tubes, and then position all the parts. Then we'll mark where my wiring holes will go, drill them, and finally, weld this thing up. I'm also eager to see if my light tabs are burned and tumbled yet. I was supposed to have them friday. But since I'm getting 50 for free I won't complain as long as they show up before I'm ready to coat the rack...

I'm supposed to recieve a fuse block, terminals, relays, and switches for the lighting early this week, and I've made plans with a local powdercoater. My goal is to have this thing coated, on my jeep and wired by the 25th. Hopefully I'll have welded pictures by friday.

I have to say, getting this thing worked out was harder than I thought it would be, but at least now its together and SHOULD go together very easily next time.

We haven't been rushing welding, as you can see. Tony's TIG welder won't turn on, and he's been having a hard time finding someone to work on it. We borrowed one from our machining & burning friend, but it draws too many amps for Tony's shop...we've finally decided to weld them at another friends sheet metal shop until Tony's is fixed or he upgrades his shop power.

It looks great sitting in the fixture though!
