Post subject:  Custom Rear Bumper

I've begun work on a custom rear bumper. I started this weekend and I'm pressed to get it done before Thursday, so it's been a bit rushed. So far I have it fabbed up. I'm doing some finish welds on it tomorrow and griding the welds down. I should be able to primer it Wednesday. It's nothing fancy and it does not have any swing-aways (yet). It does have an integrated reciever hitch and D-ring shackles. It is constructed of 3/16" mild steel just like my front bumper. It gives about 6" more clearance behind the tires. My gas tank skid is still limiting ground clearance though.

Also, it moves the reciever up about 6 inches. I was always coming down off of rocks and landing on the hitch. This should clear that up.

I was a bit concerned that it would not be able to be taken off and put on by one person like the front bumper is. But it turns out that it can. The lip that goes in under the door can support the bumper while you put the bolt in underneath.

My front bumper has two arms that slide down inside the frame rails. It supports the bumper by those while you buolt up from underneath. Both are pretty easy to remove and replace with one person. I'll get pics up soon.

I still owe you that one Inc. I really wanted to get the Synthetic Winch line and Hawse fairlead on first. Right now I have a crappy old roller fairlead I had lying around and the old steel cable. I'll get some pics for the bumper thread and then update it as I change it over.

Sorry I haven't gotten pics up yet. Was still working on the license plate. I couldn't find a reasonably priced lighted license plate frame so I took a neon one and painted it all except for the inside edge. So now it just lights up the plate. It looks very cool.

As far as the bumper, I'll get pics up this weekend. DO NOT expect it to be pretty LOL. It has all of the asthetics of a brick. I built it for two reasons.
1) improve ground clearance
2) move the hitch up higher (kept hitting it on stuff)

So it is purely functional.

The upside is you can now see my Kilby gas tank skid quite nicely.

Functional is a good thing. Function over form any day.

It's strong enough. 1/4" angle steel rails mounting it to the unibody and a 1/2" steel tube running across for the hitch. and 3/16" steel shell all over. I still have to put a plate on the bottom to connect the side panels to the rear. They are a bit flimsy and a rock could push them into the side of the jeep. Once that is done, I think I can stand the jeep on it and not dent it. So my armor is complete except for a few points I want to weld small reinforcements on. Those being the rear shocks and control arm mounts and a plate in the front from the radiator support or front skid to the front bumper.

Then I'll probably roll it the first time I take it out.

Sorry. Finally got them. Ran into some problems putting my detroit truetrac in the front, but I got it in today and got some pics of the bumpers. Keep in mind that the back one is very blocky. I plan on adding a swing away carrier later (maybe) and raised bosses with welded in D-ring shackle mounts (definitely).

very cool. thanks for the pics. are you planning on putting a hi-lift mount or a pair of d-ring shackles on the rear. i like that the rear is real short. doesnt stick way out like the stocker. front turned out well. good clearance on both ends, F&R.

I am planning on cutting hi-lift mounts front and back and I already have the shackle mounts sitting in the garage. Just have to weld them on.
