Post subject:  05+ Renegade Roof Rail/Rack

I have been looking around at roof racks from everyone and anyone who makes them. I got a quote for a custom one for $270 but passed still, even though it was exactly what I wanted. I couldn't bring myself to spend that much even. I didn't want anything super fancy or anything tall like I had before. I just needed something that I could strap a cooler and some gear to. My buddy sold me 13' of HREW .120 tube for $35 so I figured I'd use it to modify my Renegade roof rails to work like I wanted. I cut and notched 4 lengths of the tubing and welded them to my steel center section roof rails and called it good. It turned out great and is basically exactly what I needed. I rolled and painted a bunch of Plastikote all over it and added another coat of it to my roof since it was bare while I worked on my rack. I was concerned about the plastic ends of the rails breaking when the jeep flexes but I had the rails bolted together and a huge roof rack was mounted to them and there was never any issue, even with a cooler, 2 fuel cans and more gear up there. I figure if the rails will hold up to that then they will be fine with the new set up. I have a large elastic cargo net with hooks I am going to use to secure gear as well as regular old ratchet straps. I'll post pics tomorrow.

You do know that the newer renny rails are only rated for 75lbs total weight right?

Yes.

I am not concerned at all about that "rating". I've had over 200 pounds of gear on them before, while offroading, no issues.
As long as you think so,go for it.I've seen what happens after time.

Looks pretty nice, well done!

Actually, my owners manual says my '05 Renny rails are rated for only 65 pounds. I no longer have that problem. Finally I can put my mother in law's rocking chair up there with no worry that she'll fall off. I mean IT will fall off....

i've been thinking about what i can do to hold cargo up there as well... this seems to be a very good idea except i think the lack of an outside edge would be an issue for gear.. i'm looking more into some cheap low rail design that will hold a black widow rack. never thought about just welding in some rails *smack self on face* ...

I loaded up a bunch of gear on top, threw a strap on it all and then the elastic cargo net and it wasn't going anywhere.

For $35, can't be beat.

If I didn't have the light bar already I would have added light tabs. I may add 2 for the rear, but rear lights will most likely end up in the extra spaces of my rear bumper. I didn't and don't want anything higher on my jeep than the side rails really, like lights, because of higher COG and trees like to grab and break things that stick up high. I may put my axe and shovel on top of the side roof rails, since they were on the inside of them before but can't be there anymore. Other than that, I don't plan on having anything mounted higher up.

I highly recommend doing it. I used pretty stout tubing, but that was only cause that was the stuff I got a deal on. You don't need anything really beefy because the side rails aren't super beefy already. They'll hold a lot of weight, I've done it, but if you want to save money on doing your rails like this, then get lighter duty tubing and weld it up to the side rails.

I scuffed and sanded it, cleaned it, tapped it off, and then rolled it and painted it on.
