Sooooooooooooo... this year at LJS Yazhi gave me some TJ bumpers to play with... this has been a plan in the works since LJS '08 but we didn't get back together for over a year...

FIrst thing's first... we need some tow points. How's 10,000 pounds of solid 2" bar sound?

Image

Image

Some holes were opened up and the beasts were mounted... (these tow points weigh about 20 pounds each  Grade 8 hardware holds everything together all the way through the subframe.

Image
Image

Next the front TJ bumper was cut to fit and holes were cut for the tow points... (all you have to remove is the 1/2" lip from the back of the bumper, thus making it a "U" shape as opposed to a "C" shape)

Image

The fit on mine is tighter than it needs to be but approach angle is priority #1.

Things got painted up and finally mounted...

Image
a front skid will be coming soon as well as a light bar up front but I'm a little broke just now.... so it'll have to wait

doo doo man that looks great!
All you need is some metal to cover up those spots next to the new bumper and the fender and it will look stock!

Oh and sweet wrangler in the background!

My only concern would be the exposed looking places where the stock bumper used to be. What are you going to cover them up with? Or are you just going to leave it like that. It looks pretty good though, time to go hit stuff  .

Some people have just taken a piece of diamond plating and pounded it to fit between the bumper and the engine skid....supposedly it can hurt gas mileage and cooling though so i dunno :?

Yeah the edges will get covered with something... may just be a fiberglass piece to cover all the ugliness next to the grill... at least that would be easy to reproduce when I hit it on stuff and break it

Jayme- Yeah the rack got installed last night... writeup coming on that one too 8)

Yea I knew someone had, I wouldn't think it would do much if anything for cooling (that's kinda what the grill/radiator/fan are for?) but I've heard people claim cutting off that under flow of air can effect it.

EDIT*
BTW so i don't go too of topic here looks like you did a nice job on that bumper, i agree clean it up a bit and it'll be not only effective but sharp 8)

the lower front piece from bumper to the front skid does nothing to make it run hotter at all, I think I did it first over 4 years ago and 95,000 miles not one problem

For the corners it looks like some 90 degree (approx) bent sheet metal trimmed to match the lines would cover up the guts and make it look pretty normal.
