Will someone come up with a brace or something so this doesn't happen? http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/s ... 6_full.jpg

Does this sort of thing happen because the 265/75R16 tires are just too big for the axle to handle? Did having a front locker contribute to this? I want bigger tires but I don't want to start breaking parts.

Does the breakage start at the carrier bearing cap? I have seen cracks and breaks on D-80's originating from the cap area's. I have not peaked inside the front IFS yet to see if how much material is around the caps or if it looks like a failure prone area. HMM, I have a bit of time this weekend.....I think the cover is coming off.

The failure is caused by the loading and unloading of torque in the diff. Tire sizes dont play a role in it. As long as you dont jump your KJ, your fine.

I think tire size would play a role in torque, more rotating mass means more torque to turn them. It also means if something grabs the tire or it gets hung up suddenly, it will yank on the drive shafts more... Did that make sense? lol

I had a collar that I fabbed up and placed over the part by the pinion where I believe the crack first starts. If my darn website would ever go up I would post pictures.

Anyways, the crack is due to shockloading. Try not to bounce the KJ, that will usually do it. Or have the wheels start spinning fast and come down on some grippy surface. Also, a locker can actually help reduce breakage sometime because it prevents wheel spin.

the Dana 30 solid axle is worthless for anything over 33" anyways. Even then it usually needs to be built up for any real wheelin'. The aluminum case doesn't help us any... It really isn't the tire size or lockers that kills our diffs though (we can't fit tires big enough to snap CV's). The CV's that do break are usually due to poor lift design...
