I noticed some rust on my stock rock rails on my KJ. So today I removed them, cleaned them up, and sanded them. I would like to paint them with a textured, black rust-oleum. Question is: Should I use a primer on the rock rails before I paint them with rust-oleum? |

I use Rustoleum Heavy Metal primer before I paint, then top coat with Rustoleum of my choice. The primer helps prevent future rust and helps adhesion. |

x4. Regardless of what you're painting, primer makes any finish coat adhere better. It's never really required, but will almost always give you a better result (including cars, walls, wood trim, etc.). Dan |

I would definately primer them. and if you really want them to last, throw on a coat of bedliner between primer and paint. |

If you are using the Rustoleum hammered paint it says you dont need primer if I remember correctly. I always put a real quick thin coat of primer on though just to add an extra coat of protection. The rustoleum hammered paint is really tough and I recommend it. |

I use the rustoleum rust something or other, it's a flat primer, it's what i use to touch up my rear bumper when i scuff it, or repaint the diff cover, or skids or underbody |
