I started with RRO roof rails. Then I started looking around the garage for things I could possibly use in making this thing.
I found some HD Simpson steel ties, some king kong 3/8 thick angle that I "found" years ago. This is what I ended up with. A total of 12 pieces, one for every end of 6 cross members(5 for cargo, 1 to support the spoiler. I wanted plenty of tie points

I didn't have any stock for the cross bars so I got 3 ten foot lengths of IMC conduit from Home Depot. Its thicker than EMT. It's thick enough to have threads on both ends but not as thick as RMC.

I was wondering why I kept pieces of the front bumper that I chopped up. Shaped them with a heat gun and a piece of round pipe for a pad between the brackets and roof rails.

Cool, Sometimes that's how the best projects start! "let's see... I'll take one of those and weld it to one of those.... then cut some off here" 8) That's actually how my rack started. Keep it up

It's nice to be able to join pieces of metal together. Though I got chunks of finger meat missing from the last couple of days!

Well, I'm back at it. IMC conduit is tacked in. I had a towel to pad the step ladder to weld. The towel caught fire and burned my arm! Because I had the welding helmet on I didn't know. Not bad but cooked a couple of inches of skin!

Each bracket will have 1 horizontal and 1 vertical hole for bungees or tiedowns.

Looks great. Are they removable?

Removeable and moveable. One bolt on each end of each cross .

I might make something similar to this for use with my skyslider. Great design candpliberty

Are the RRO rails parallel, or do them taper like OEM?

Post subject:  Re: Just another roof rack

they are tapered. The rails use the oem mount holes. I can adjust the cross rails a inch or so.

Looks good!

If you ever have a chance, can you measure the minimum and max INSIDE distance between the rails?

LOL, I didn't mean to freak you out. It's cool. I sort of blurted it out. Sorry, man.

Bought a 48" cast/stamped HiLift from Amazon. 2- 1/2" x 3 bolts, 6- flat washers, 2- nuts, 2- wingnuts and a reenforced rubber exhaust hanger is what it took to mount the jack to my roof rack, using the holes in the end brackets.

A couple of springs, a couple of furniture leg rubber thingies with a 3/4 pinched in it, a couple of master locks keyed alike with the gas can locks.
