As the title says. I want to build a removable basket that fastens to the roof rails with some cool features that I have been brainstorming.

Wondering how tall ppl usually will go with these. I was thinkin around 14" but some personal input would be appreciated.

What thickness pipe should I go with? I do not have much custom fabrication experience of this nature but I can weld pretty decent (comes with the job) but I am looking at price vs weight vs strength.

Any other suggestions are welcome and if I can get some cash for the materials I will post a thread on the build.

Thanks

keep in mind that material is weight
and the rook has a load capacity of 200-300 lbs
I would say aluminum tubing but it is hard to weld without experience
using steel is easier to work with but more weight

I would say get all the stock together that you plan on using and weigh it so you know what you are starting with

good luck and dont forget the pictures we love to see progress photos

1" aluminum sqaure tube should hold just about whatever you want up there since you max out at about 250lbs anyways... (or go with 1.5" to be safe) I was thinking of having my friend, who is a master aluminum welder, do one up for me sometime next spring. good luck, and post pics. i'd love to see some other ideas...

14" ! ? ! That's awfully TALL!!!! The top of my roof rack is only 8 1/2" off the roof with the rails at 5" center to center. I removed my rails and made a new plate 1" x 6" with the bolt pattern for the roof and just built up from there. The lower rail and vertical supports to the roof are 3/4" EMT, the upper rail and supports between the two are 1/2" EMT. If I remember correctly I think the whole thing cost me about $20 in material! It supports anything that I have thrown up there so far. I carry my spare up there too now. No flexing at all!

Here's a picture of one of the roof plates

And a couple more just because!

Just remember!!!!! NOTHING on the KJ is square! It's kinda like a trapezoid thingy (I think that's what it's called!) Wider at the front than the back and curved up and down.

Thanks Devlish, 8) . I have ideas for a new one. I may take this one off and build another one a little different. Next time, I think I want both rails to come all the way to the front for a full length rack.

Ya, Watch that first step.... it's a doozy! :ROTFL:

Used to be a little 4' square porch/deck there, but wood rotted away and then a storm took it down for me!

Thanks for the pics and advice KJWildman. Looks very similar to what I had in mind only like you said, extended to the front.

Actuaallllllly, ...... ..... they were just poser lights at the time. I had planned on wiring them this last summer until the motor went South .... and the Jeep went North! Some of the guys have drilled holes in the roof and some run the wiring down under the black strip, down along the windshield under the trim and then in to the engine compartment. I am going to run the wiring over the winter while I am wiring for this other stuff going in and rewiring all the dash cluster. I picked up a 5 pin W.P. threaded disconnect bulkhead fitting and 5 conductor cable and will wire that in to the roof next to the front leg of the rack. Then I will be able to just unplug it when I want to remove it for anything. 8)

I always likes Wildman's rack
the lights are forward enough and the hole there allows for the sunroof to work fully
I wanted one

NICE job on your fabrication
