I didn't like the fact that the liberty cargo area isn't flat with the seats down. It is also a little small for me to lay down in the back while camping. Here is my platform I build to sleep in the back.
It is a four piece design that can be stacked and removed when not used. Used 1/2" plywood covered in carpet w/ padding. Used 2x4's for the rear piece. The piece that is over rear seats connects to rear piece and lays flat on front edge of rear seat.

This view is with front seats in normal driving position with rear gate closed.

This view is front seats all the way forward with platform headrest down and rear brace slid out. I used drawer brackets to pull out 2x4's for foot extension for when rear gate is open. I still need to create a bracket or legs to hold up head rest from falling in rear foot wells.

All pieces in place for sleeping. Obviously I can't crawl in from the back. I don't think my extension would hold up.

And last all pieces stacked for removal or travel

No "jeep" tent. I do have a small tent I use for backpacking but for one night camps I like keeping it simple. Usually sleep on the ground or on a cot out in the open if the weather is nice. I can fit with the rear door closed if needed. I also have a screen for the rear windows to keep bugs out.

Nice work...but couldn't you do something similar with an air mattress? Just make sure the part that sticks out the rear of the jeep has some support.

Maybe I just don't get this mod because I'm 6'5" and just can't see myself trying to lay down back there.

I am thinking of doing that. I will need to raise the back in order to keep it level.

That is a pretty neat setup!
I wonder if anyone has tried to get KK seats in a KJ, since the passenger seat folds down flat, which could come in handy for camping!

Looks great!

I'd like to see how you support the 'head' (by the seats) area of the platform.

Sorry for the late reply. I have been putting my duffel bag under it for support. Works pretty good at the moment. I am currently upgrading the platform to include storage underneath by removing the back seat.

That is a nice setup!
My wife and I sleep in the back of our Rig with the tailgate closed. (usually if we get to a camp ground
way too late or it's just pouring rain out.)
She is 5'5" and I'm 6'5", so I sleep diagonally and "just" fit back there; and it's rather cozy!
