Got tired of dealing with the current offerings in the world of bike racks. Didn't want to put the bikes on the roof, didn't want to fight with removing my thru-axle wheels, and didn't want to lose departure angle for the shuttles in Moab and Sedona. Here's what I came up with: ![]() It mounts to the factory spare studs and is a 2" receiver. Rack is a modified version of one I bought online. ![]() Bikes are held by rims and any size bike fits with no problems. ![]() Plenty of ground clearance for the trails... also frees up the receiver hitch so I can pull the trailer. More goodies are in the works to attach to the door-mount 2" receiver. If anyone has any interest in one of these... PM me and we can talk. |

Very nice idea! if you gotta remove the back tire anyways, might as well keep the hitch huh?? I'm in the market for a 3-4 place bike rack right now, and i hate that i have to remove the rear tire for any of the racks to fit!!! I'm not a fan of losing my spare while on a biking trip with the family. there isn't even enough room in the cargo to haul the tire, once the burky and a duffle bag is back there. looks like i might have to spend another few hundred$$$ just to get a roof rack to haul the spare!!! ugh. anyways, any ideas for a rack that keep the spare?? (withOUT going roofrack for bikes) |

I have a four bike rack that can be used with the spare in place. It's in the garage. I'll try to remember to look at it tonight to get the make/model. |

oh snap!!!! that's what i'm looking for!!!! but is it the bottom wheel mount style?? or the goose-neck style that grabs the frame??? i honestly didn't want to spend the extra money (usually double) for the wheel mount kind. |

Mine's a Saris T-Rax Basic 4 Bike (frame mount kind) http://www.saris.com/bike-racks/vehicle ... racks.html We've had it on the back of the Jeep a couple times. Glass was not able to open with bikes in the normal upright position. The rack can tilt down away from the vehicle, but it's a pain. Taking the crew riding in my vans, we've removed some pedals and stuffed 5 bikes on it. |

I'm confused... obviously, if you're driving a Jeep you have a driver's license so why are you still dealing with bicycles? Is it in case you run out of fuel? Couldn't you just make a fuel can holder on the bumper? |

Thanks! i wish it mentioned how far from the hitch-pin to the upright it is... most of the ones i'm finding are 8-10" and that's not enough to get passed the tire. this obviously is. i wonder if extending it 2-3" would be sturdy enough using some 1/4" thick 2" sq tubing?? hmmm..... JL Rockies... i'd prefer to drive as well. |

Back to Ben. Ben have you seen the Saris B.A.T. Rack? It uses a mount similar to yours while retaining the ability to mount the spare. If you could do something that lifts the bikes as high as yours, retains the spare, and have additional accessories I think you'd have a pretty cool little product. |

I would love it if I could have used those kinds of mounts... but the downhill bikes don't fit in to those kinds of racks. They will only work in racks that hold them by the wheels. ![]()
