Winch Weight

I don't know if this is in the right section.

How do I know how strong of a winch to get?
I am looking at a 4,500lb winch, but I want to know if it will have the power to pull me out.

8500+ tbh

don't get me wrong.. there are plenty of circumstances where even a 1500lb winch will get you out, or a 750lb come-along for that matter, but there are just as many other circumstances where they won't - "duty cycle" becomes a bigger issue the longer the pull as well

another factor few really think about.. those 4500 ATV winches, cost just as much as a decent 8500+

But I don't do anything to get super burried, I trail ride, and the trails I do I know I can make it without getting stuck in the worse of conditons, and the worse thing that could happen to me is sliding into a snowbank in the middle of january, pull out someone that is also in a snowbank or w/e.

I do know however that on my cummins there is a 12klb winch that came withit, and it pulls everything, pulled out a dumptruck that was stuck on wet grass. I don't know much about winches otherwise.

With the snowbank you might actually need a bigger winch. You're not only pulling the vehicle but also displacing a lot of snow, which can be quite heavy.

then if it's not a rate issue,

it falls back to the money issue

4500 vs 8500-9000.. they're within a hundred bucks of each other

How big should I go? 8,500 lb enough do you think?

Also, on my cummins, there is two trailer hitch type things that are mounted to the frame, then go through holes in the bumper. And the winch is mounted to a custom like box that is made from square tubing, that you just slide into the two trailer hitches, and throw in the pins in, and then there is a connector for the electrial wiring. So when you need it, you just take it out of the toolbox, and put it on.
I LOVE this design, I mean, picking the winch back up into the truck is hard, but its well worth it.

Is there away I can do this for my KJ? I'd throw the winch in when I go wheeling, or keep it on during a snowstorm and store it in the back or in the shed during better conditons.

Yea, I just noticed that. 170 for the one before, 250 for a 8500lb. I'm deff planing on the 8500lb now. I just want it to be enough. I'm halfway clueless.

I'm not an expert but they only ways I've seen people attach a winch to a KJ/KK is with either a steel bumper (ARB or custom) or with this: http://www.detoursusa.com/kjbackbone.php

or you could use a front hitch and cradle system.. but i've seen the class II's break when used at over a 20* line angle

Yeah, I can't afford that. I mean, it'd be over $400 with shipping. And I deff can not afford an ARB $1,000 bumper.
Not including $300 for the winch. (If that is including the controls, which I don't know)

I think it'd be better to walk/drive back home to grab the Cummins. lol

Thank you guys for your help, i'm halfway shocked that there would be people online at 1AM let alone able to help a kid get his KJ unstuck at this time

you got anyone who is handy with a welder? TBH iit's not that big of feat to make something that will work, all a matter of .. what you want it to look like in the end i guess?

I've been gas and tig welding for years, I just don't know where to weld too that will hold.

1/4" or 3/8th channel bolted to or in, the frame rails, as a mount for the bumper and weld to the mounts

welding to the vehicle itself typically just turns into a PITA with a angle grinder later

peek up in the fascia where the tow hook mounts are - usually becomes self explanatory from that point on

Find a front hitch for the liberty they are making them again. They install with 6 grade 8 bolts so I promise they won't move. It is like 150 bucks and the cradles are like another 150 and I have seen warn 9500 pound winchs with the cradle for 550 used.

You want a winch that has a pull that is twice the weight of your vehicle.The Backbone system is really nice and really cheap,quality costs $$$,same goes for a good winch that will not let you down when you need it.

oh I like that alot. problem is I'm not of the crowd that wants to leave my winch on the vehicle all the time.

I do like having a receiver bracket mounted winch. gives you so many choices for where the winch can go. front of rig, back of rig, on the trailer deck, basically anyplace they has or you can weld a 2" receiver to.
