Post subject: | My mini HF trailer build - **PICTURES** |
Wanted some place to document my own little build. Nothing out of the box here just turning your standard harbor freight red style trailer into a more capable camping/overland type of trailer. Trailer just arrived in the mail yesterday will put it together shortly and provide some pictures of what 190.00 will get you. I will be selling the axle, tires and wheels shortly since I will be upgrading those parts and putting the $$ back into the build. Trailer link: http://www.harborfreight.com/870-lb-cap ... 42708.html axle will be upgraded to: http://www.easternmarine.com/LOADRITE-T ... le-609070/ - Ordered $163.20 Tires will be general grabber AT2 205/75/15: http://www.tirebuyer.com - ordered 207.88 wheels will be a set of white 15x5 5on4.5: http://recstuff.com/15X5-5-4.5-White-Sp ... Wheel.aspx - Ordered $71.69 That is it so far, I could go with a cheaper set of tires but then they wouldn't match my jeep tires and the added cost is worth the bling of it all to me...for now. Also I am considering picking up an arc welder and trying my hand at it. I think if I can use one well enough to put out a decent weld I could really make a nice box for it. Other details will be LED lights, ammo can storage, d rings, tie downs, cook surface. this will be a build in progress and by no means will be completed quickly. Only as time and money permits..stay tuned. total build cost to date: 632.77 |

What size HF did you go with? Just curious. Are you going with longer springs? May want to look into shocks as well Just some suggestions for a smoother ride |

I will have to consider additional upgrades as I get into the build, IE springs and shocks. when fully loaded I plan on being right around the weight limit will have to see how it handles then. |

I don't know what all you're doing with it, but I can tell you from personal experience, the 4x8 folding trailer w/ 12" wheels is the cat's meow. I've hauled rediculous amounts of stuff on it of all kinds, shapes and sizes. 8 years on and beating the piss out of it it's still going strong. it could use a good repaint and probably some new tires (not from wear, but from age.) when the time comes I'll just buy another, as tires are actually silly expensive for it. things I've hauled with it... several thousand pounds of used/junk computers rock gravel sand mulch (90 bags, 2225# worth. yes I was WAY over weight at that time.) jacuzzi tub all of grandma's possessions out of her house after it flooded cabinets for the bathroom drywall plywood sheets 2x4s 6x6x10 railroad ties for retaining walls motorcycles car parts (wheels, tires, engines, transmissions, doors, fenders, axles, etc.) bicycles for 8 people kid's playset (4x6 footprint. not heavy, but easily 25' tall.) frightening quantites of stuff for yard sales and donation cinder blocks ladders |

Its primary use is going to be for camping. To be able to hold enough gear for 3 or 4 nights worth. |

Something else to plan on is the fact they can get "lost" behind you. The 4X4 that I built I couldn't see in any of the mirrors going down the road or backing I ended up getting some driveway markers ( like you use in the wintertime ) to stick in each corner so I'd know where it was ![]() |

I had the same problem with my 4x8 utility trailer. I added a couple of rods with a antenna topper on each one. Another mod was armoring the taillights and mounting them higher. I wish I still had that trailer! |

Thanks, Megalos. It's a good price for what you get but out of the range of my wallet. I got to buy a house with some storage attached before I can build/buy a trailer. I was just curious aboutcost for a tub like this. |

no, my garage is being used by a wood worker who is completeing some custom cabinets for us. He should be done in 2 weeks then I am clearing my side of the garage for the project. I am also trying to sell the stock axle, wheels and tires locally so I can pick up the new stuff. |

Axle was ordered today and I also ordered the wheels. decided on the silver instead of white, the frame is red thought it would match good. Right now I have decided to paint the box silver as well. This stuff should be here next week and hopefully I can squeeze some time into assembly. I have to hunt for some tires too, I am thinking just look for a decent pair of used tires. Well see what I can find. |

ok, just ordered my tires found a good deal on the AT2's I wanted, this should be the last of the expensive orders. I am working on purchasing a used welder which I will use to build the frame of the box, that will be mainly angle iron, not sure on thickness yet. once the frame is complete the walls will be filled with cedar tongue and groove. Cant wait. I have the frame built and axle mounted will get some pics up shortly. |
