just wanted to give yal a close up look on my take of removing the pinch welds ... same principle as a couple other fab posts i've seen but i didnt want to attempt plastic welding

you will need
1. dremel
2. large hammer
3. heavy duty duct tape
4. FLEX SEAL ( as seen on tv product, rubber in aerosol can https://www.toptvstuff.com/shop/promos/FlexSeal/?tag=im|sm|go|tp|tm&gclid=CKCevuO6lLYCFYpDMgod3j0ALA )
5. hardener ( also in aerosol for your convenience )
6. 24 - 48 hours ( for drying purposes )

begin

we all know of the infamous ( and unnecessary ) tire biter

first you will need to place your jeep on a jack stand and remove the front wheel ( one side at a time with 3 tires remaining on the ground chalked and e-brake on )

notice the new JBA lift for good measure ;)

a clear view of the culprit

use dremel along outline of extrusion

now use large hammer to "fold" the weld inward ( some suggest using a heat source to make this easier, i did not have one available but this still seemed to be fairly easy ) i suggest starting at the top and work down, each time folding more and more until desired flatness is reached

clean with dremel and apply a layer of FLEX SEAL ( this layer is to help prevent rust ) let dry before moving to next step

create flat surface to match inner fender with duct tape
Image

spray FLEX SEAL and HARDENER in multiple layers allowing time for each layer to dry sufficiently until desired thickness is reached

once dry replace tire and smile as you should now have less rubbing and hopefully your full turning radius back

Zac, nice write-up. My only concern is that the duct tape overtime will eventually loose it's adhesive and start to peel off.

I think that the sealant which he has sprayed past the edges of the duct tape will hold it. If not its an easy touch up/fix.

Just as easy to do it the way most of us did from the get go IMO
But it'll work for a while :wink:
At least you didn't cut it off and hack up the pinch weld, so good job overall

Well I did it the other way but due to being hard headed with the tire size and wheel offset my tires ripped the melted down flap off on the drivers side, so im looking at this as a repair verses getting a new wheel well liner and modifying it or removing it entirely.

Im thinking of spraying that stuff on a piece of plastic sliding it up behind the opening and then coating it again.

The thing is the duct tape dries out and comes off and yes it will since its not sealed from the back side, dirt/dust/moisture will get in that way and it'll come off
Not downing the way it was done, just stating what I see
If I had one to repair that had the plastic cut off like that I would either find some other plastic or some metal to pop rivet in and then coat with what he used.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for ... I defiantly went past the tape and made sure to clean the surrounding plastic to get the flex seal to hold well ( each layer went a little further up and out )

The tape was really just an easy way to match the contours of the well

Not saying it will last forever ... Not saying it won't ... But I'm optimistic and it's an easy fix if I need to do it again


The flex seal was cheep and I really didn't want to attempt welding plastic or buy the 70 dollar welding kit for that matter ...

Still glad to see yals thoughts

I used a blowtorch and a spoon from the kitchen. Got it smooth and took 80 grit sandpaper and scuffed it up a little...you couldnt even tell.

Heat gun works great as well, have done several that way , heat the plastic up, fold right back over the pinch weld, smooth out and done . I never cut all the plastic out either, heat, cut, fold back, pound over, reheat, fold back in, done

Takes very little heat really to get the fenderwells hot enough to work with, blow torch you'd have to be very careful with it so it wouldn't melt it. Just need it pliable

IMHO, A blowtorch would be too much heat, it's easy to over heat even with a heat gun, don't ask how I know... If a blowtorch is all you have...Go for it.

Helpful and great looking KJ! I always wondered how to do that since I've never seen any pics on it. How are you supposed to fold it back once you've cut it? Melt it and fuse it to the other side?

Not sure i understand your question ... Just beat it with a large hammer until its flat



As for those of you who said it wouldn't last ... It's been a while and the jeep has seen floods mud snow even temps in the 30s all the way up to the 70s ... It's holding strong

It's been less than a month, so I'm not surprised it's still holding up. I'd be more interested in knowing how it's holding up at the 1 year anniversary. Duct tape can do some great things, but duct tape is not designed to be a permanent fix. In your defense, you could reapply duct tape and start the process over in a worst case scenario.

Are you referring to the plastic mold or the metal pinch weld? If you're talking about the plastic, then you would simply fold the heated plastic back (it might be wise to use leather welding gloves to work with it) and weld it (melt the plastic together) so there are no seems. Of course, before you do the finishing touches, you would want to apply undercoating to the bare metal of the freshly pounded pinch weld to keep rust from occurring.

I honestly hate the idea of pounding the pinch weld over. It seems like such a redneck thing to do. But after looking at the pinch weld, I see why people do it that way. Cutting the pinch weld and welding it sounds more practical from a body shop's point of view, but you might be opening a can of worms due to potential lose of structural integrity by doing it that way. So far, my 245/70/17 on stock rims have not required the pounding of the pinch weld, but I know if I go any larger then I'll have to do it. And I have full intentions to go larger, so the idea will become a realty soon.

The 'redneck" way of doing it is to cut it off and weaken the structure.
Bending it over is the right way and keeps the strength intact.
