Hello all,
I have been working on a project in my "spare time"
. I frequently like to go to the cabin, and as anyone with a KJ knows cargo space is, well, lacking. So when you take into consideration I am usually bringing the wife, 2 daughters, dog, hamster, partridge a pear tree, and luggage of all sorts, I needed extra space. So I decided to re-purpose my 4x8 trailer.
I have been using a long Thule ski box bolted to the trailer for extra cargo, but now that kids are actually skiing and to the age where friend want to come along skiing, camping, or whatever, that ski box isn't going to cut it. Even in the van. So I came up with this.
I re-purposed a fiberglass tonneau cover from an 01 step-side Ford Ranger.
3 sheets of 7 ply AC some 2x2, 2x4, 2x6, 4 coats helmsman spar urethane, and a bunch of stainless fasteners.
I also caulked the joints in the decking to prevent road spray from getting in from underneath.
Now it's ready for skiing, camping, hunting, whatever! Plus a 4x8 sheet of ply still fits inside with everything closed.
It can also be disassembled in about 15 minutes if need be.
It took some visionary thought
and a little effort. When I put new (bigger) wheels and tires I could probably use it on trail runs.
