Hello all,

I have been working on a project in my "spare time" :-)r . I frequently like to go to the cabin, and as anyone with a KJ knows cargo space is, well, lacking. So when you take into consideration I am usually bringing the wife, 2 daughters, dog, hamster, partridge a pear tree, and luggage of all sorts, I needed extra space. So I decided to re-purpose my 4x8 trailer.

I have been using a long Thule ski box bolted to the trailer for extra cargo, but now that kids are actually skiing and to the age where friend want to come along skiing, camping, or whatever, that ski box isn't going to cut it. Even in the van. So I came up with this.

Image

I re-purposed a fiberglass tonneau cover from an 01 step-side Ford Ranger.

Image

3 sheets of 7 ply AC some 2x2, 2x4, 2x6, 4 coats helmsman spar urethane, and a bunch of stainless fasteners.

Image

I also caulked the joints in the decking to prevent road spray from getting in from underneath.

Image

Now it's ready for skiing, camping, hunting, whatever! Plus a 4x8 sheet of ply still fits inside with everything closed. :D

It can also be disassembled in about 15 minutes if need be.

It took some visionary thought :5SHOTS: and a little effort. When I put new (bigger) wheels and tires I could probably use it on trail runs.

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Does anyone have a good supplier (inexpensive) for 13" 4 lug wheels for a trailer?

Just got back this evening from a long 4th weekend road trip to the cabin. It was the first road trip with the trailer project. Worked great! :pepper: I got 27 mpg pulling it down the highway while running the a/c in the CRD. For short trips to the lake I was also able to put a canoe on it. :SOMBRERO:

You might be better of replacing the hubs with 5 lug. Then your choices become infinitely better. And the price of the wheels will be affordable.

Add a couple of uprights (steel would be better) in those sockets toward the rear of your cool trailer to stabilize the drop gate. It'll last way longer. I wish we lived somewhere we could store something like what you built. Excellent!

Very nice job all the way around. I'm glad to hear that you and your family are getting a lot of fun use out of it. :D

Actually, yes.

I had been working on this just prior to your posting your Herman. I can see advantages to both trailers. Yours is definitely more aerodynamic and can accommodate taller stuff. Mine is lower profile and can still fit 4x8 sheet goods. Plus I was able to used a trailer I already had to keep my cost down.

I think you are correct.

Looks good - super functional too. Glad you were able to get out and test it out.

Any plans to paint the plywood?

No way! I like the woody look! :SOMBRERO: Plus it's got a gallon of helmsman spar urethane on it. The finish is way more durable than paint, it's easy to maintain, and it's as smooth as a baby's butt.
