Nothing fancy, just a nice and sturdy steel rack. The side rails are 1.32" x 0.133" A500 pipe size tube with 1" x 0.095" HREW tube cross rails. I'm going to add another front and rear cross tube with the 1.33" stuff that has bends in it for maximum space. I decided to make it a flat top to keep it low and also so I can still haul plywood up there. I have been really pushing my luck with the factory side rails and homemade crossbars. The last and probably sketchiest thing I hauled up there were the pieces of 21' tube. The distance wasn't far and all slow back roads but it still made me nervous. Building this is a lot easier than I thought. All I planned on doing was bending side rails and I ended up with this: Side bars ![]() Most of the rack ![]() It weighs about 50lbs hopefully it doesn't affect handling too much. Looks like the weak point will be the studs coming out of the roof. There are 8 of them but they are only 6 mm. Haven't heard really anything about them breaking, but I wonder about them shearing in an impact or hard flex. |

I'm just the opposite, I'm comfortable with factory side and homemade crossbars. Mostly because it works and is cheap. Cargo baskets, racks wouldn't work well for me hauling kayaks. But I do like your builds, keep on building please. |

I've hauled a piece of 33 ft drill pipe on my homemade cross rails with facory side rails. It flexed like a stick Sent from my Home Phone using Tapatalk |

[QUOTE=AtTheHelm;15515319]Added the extra bars. The front will likely get removed or modified because there is now a lot of wind noise. The rear also needs adjusting because I managed to put it right were the antenna sits. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Saw it on the other thread and wondered where the antenna went. |

Took off the front bar, now wind noise is cut down 90%. Can hardly hear anything. Also took care of the rear antenna issue. As my first tube project I gotta say its way more fun than plate! Notched out ![]() Small piece of tube replaced ![]() Ground down and finished ![]() ![]() Nice and low ![]() |

Looks really good!! Clean and simple are sometimes the best. Any lights in the near future? Once I get back from another trip across the pond I will be building a full length "expedition" rack with a integrated light cage..... I never make things simple and someday it will probably bite me in the A%$. Like I said, good job. Oh and this would be a wonderful base for a RTT (Roof Top Tent) ![]() |
