Removed the front bumper and worked out some new bumper mounts.
Hopefully done by the end of this week. 1/4" angle iron

Sweet!! I was waiting on this!!

But on mine I use three bolts per side. Makes it a little bit stronger, as well as a plate with nuts welded on that slide into the unibody.

I'm thinking of three bolts as well.
I noticed the unibody is sloped at the front so I'll have to cut the angle iron at an angle on the track torch or porta-band. And or build a wedge while I have the rear bolt in and have the front droop down to level.

I'm also using all 1/4"
And chopping the wings off and boxing them in with some tubing perhaps.

To get it level, can't you just open up the openings in the frame there? That's how I got the front ends of my Backbone brackets to get flush against the frame with the rear end. If we're thinking about the same thing.

:?: I considered it but upon further inspection my entire unibody in the front is angled up about 10 degrees. Not from an accident or anything that's just how it is? :?:

Took the bumper off again after school today.
Had to Dremel out the holes in the unibody not even a millimeter for my half inch grade 8 bolts to slip on through.

It's hanging loosely just so I could visualize things.
Image

I set a piece of angle iron across the front, again to use my brain and get ideas.
Image

I was originally thinking of building a cradle down there but it hangs so low that it would defeat the purpose of a new bumper entirely.

So I chopped the mounting brackets down to 7" out from the unibody and I'm building a "stand" or a platform so when I do mount my winch it's sitting centered between the fog lights in front of the grille!

Ground off all the mill scale with the wire wheel instead of the flap disc cause I didn't want to lose metal.
Image

More coming soon! 8)

Mine sit flush with the unibody and angle up. But I cut the angle iron to the correct angle. Then my main bumper body gets tacked on. Then supports are added.

Made some more progress after putting in a few hours of bumper work today.

Removed the factory bumper entirely and started building the frame for the winch bumper.
Image

Picked up a used winch plate for $20 smackaroo's, it's just sitting on top of the angle iron so I can visualize things again.
Image

Noticed the winch plate was going to sit funny unless I modified it a bit. So I took the torch to it so it'll sit level.
Image

Bumper was off for good at this point so I cut out the turn signals with a cutting disc "ever so gingerly". Paint matching the black turn signal portion once it's all done and I can clean and wax the old girl.
Image

Also there is plenty more work to be done for the bumpers mounting brackets. Four 1/2" grade 8 bolts on the bottom and two of the same on top. Needed to plasma cut and Dremel those holes out tomorrow.

Spent another several hours at school and picked up where I left off.

A little snippet Image

Some clamps holding the front plate on. Ended up having 5 clamps at once.
Image

Front plate tacked on
Image

Front plate welds from the rear, ended up grinding some out due to incomplete fusion and poor penetration.
Image

Side plates cut out and welded on, still had slag on them.
Image

Started rounding off the edges and SET my winch plate on top to take a look see.
Image

Semi attached, done for today. Within a day or two of work on it I'll be done and then it's off to be powder coated.

Didn't have as much time as I would have liked to work on the bumper today although I did get a chance to grind a little bit and then build some spacers to offset the 3/4" gap to have it sit level when tightened down.
Cut four 3/8" 2x2" squares out with the torch and affixed them together to create the 3/4", flap disc'd it flat and cut through with the oxy-acet and then dremeled them out and redid it with the flap disc.
Image

Clamped them down where they needed to be and welded them in.
Image

Reattached the bumper to see things from head on and it sits level.
Only off by 1 degree overall.
I'll probably end up making wings that follow the contour line of the grille.
And then deleting and boxing off the factory bumper that sticks out beyond that.

Put in two or three hours today, reinforced a few things, ground out welds and redid them, chipped out a mountain of slag and the school closed early so I couldn't finish in time.
Another hour or two of grinding when school opens Monday morning and then it's off to be powder coated.

Nearly finished, it's all being held on by friction (no bolts).
Wrinkle finish came out good but when initially dropped off and done the wrinkle finish didn't pop out, only the gloss which showed some grinder marks here and there.
Waited another week for it to be redone and then the wrinkle came out as wanted.

Guess who picked up an parts Liberty for $300 that still runs?! (Ruffffffffffff)!!!!

Interiors in great shape after 150K miles. Exterior has a ding where it was t boned opposite of the gas tank location. Fender flares are missing or cracked with one good one.
Engine has a ridiculous knock in it. Might be worth $5 total! :D

Parts jeep though..

Sold the jeep as is, had a few winter tires and a roof basket and ended up making $1,600!

Ordered my 4.10 ring and pinions and master overhaul kits for both diffs for $700 shipped to Alaska. Considering adding another locker to the front diff.

Also had gotten around to putting my stubby bumper on.
Took a few months of stubbing my toes on it but now I don't have to worry!

Weighed the bumper with winch on and it's at  135 POUNDS!

Hey. Thanks for the kind words.
First big project I gave myself and it turned out ok.
I've learned a bit from it so the next big project is going to go smoother.

Roof rack next!
