Are those RRO 'sliders'?
While you're in there I would definitely add more bracing than those two pcs of 1"X1"..

Yes they are RRO sliders, they only have two mounting points, so if there is a direct hit by a 2014 Chevy cruise at 20MPH they bend.

I had planned on adding another piece of 1x1" in the center at a minimum.

I could overbuild them pretty easily at this point but I'm using scrap from the school for practice.

Do you guys get to load test your welds? It would be a fun contest to find out who in the class can make the strongest weld.

We are able to do bend tests, I haven't yet. It hasn't been a requirement thus far.
I'm probably going to start certifying soon though.

Update on the rock rail repair, went in for 3 hours to get a head start on the rail.

Tacked it up: Image

Laid a fat bead with MIG (flux core wire): Image

Ground her flat: Image

Still have to add the other piece though, stay tuned!

Was in class and knocked out 2, 3 and 4G plates for assignments using M.I.G

First up a 3G using .035 (bare wire): ended up with an 88% Image

Had a restart and you can see that near the top.

Image

For the next two grooves I used .045 FCAW, here is a 2G root pass (did ok, still need improvement): received an 85% Image

Still working on it! Image

Last up the best 4G I've ever done, down on the tabletop since lighting was poor while overhead. Received a 95% Image

Started welding pipe today..... Not thrilled lol.

Had to unload 5,000 pounds of schedule 40 by hand.
I also wasn't the one cutting the pipe coupons for training.

There's a reason they're sloppy.

Image

I also haven't used SMAW in months and laid a 6010 bead down to get back into the mindset.

Next up, figment and the four tacks: Image

Tacking it up and feathering the beads out was all we had to do since set up and getting a quick lesson from the teacher took quite a while.

Finishing up the weld this week on an optional day.

Rock rail has been completely welded up and ground all the powder coat off. I'll weld it back up and use some primer and paint her up this week and post a picture.

Been working on pipe in class, knocked out a 6G today.

Stayed after, hooked up the long leads and SMAW'd my finished rock rail back on.
Much less "bend" going on haha.

Next up are plans for a rear tube swing out bumper with the tire and a fuel can.

I haven't gone through the TIG course yet but I asked if I could get a try at it.
In 30 minutes or so I went from the horrendous porosity to the "sorta" nicer beads as shown in Le Foe toe: Image

Starting T.i.G!

I won't be using any aluminum, just mild steel and stainless.

I only had a few minutes to give a fillet weld a go and here are the results. Image

Started the T.I.G course today, was trying out a few settings for a pad weld.

I am planning on being able to tig a 6G (45* Angle pipe in a fixed position) with stainless by course end. (Ambitious or plain stupidity? Who knows... :-)r )

Nice penetration on the pipe and the sliders look great! Ah yes, I did plenty of beads on the 1/4" plates. Keep up the practice!

T.I.G TIME

Had a 3F and 4F (Fillet Weld) to do with a snatch start tig setup on 1/8" mild steel.

3F root pass:

3F with fourth pass: Image

Same as above, different angle: Image

4F (Overhead Fillet weld) first time ever trying it, need practice.... Lol

White, I just wanted to say I've been following your thread for a while now and it's always an interesting read. Thanks for posting it. I don't weld, but love the idea of maybe learning it someday. Looking forward to your bumper and roof rack fabrication! :JEEPIN:

Hey thanks Howard. Was beginning to think no one was watching since 3/4 of the threads views are from me.... :-)r
