I used the 1" steal stock on top of the hitch arms to drop the hooks down so they come out of the holes that are already in the bumper instead of needing to cut new ones.

Update:

I performed this mod on my 06' KJ today. I did only 1 as a test unit.

I used a Class 2; 1 1/4" trailer hitch with a 2 1/2" drop. Its centered well in the spots where the stock tow hooks would protrude. Bumper trimming required if you dont have hooks to begin with.

I dropped mine about an inch, but I would recommend at least another 1/4" to 1/2".

I used a hand drill, but I highly recommend a drill press and high quality metal drill bit.

Today I kind of fudged this together, but Im going to redo this sometime in the week, with proper trimming. Im not entirely happy with the setup, but as it was saturday, supplies were limited. All in all it took me about 10 minutes to remove the front bumper (5 of which were spent on the running light connections). I spent maybe an hour drilling and installing. Drilling took along time bay hand as I didnt want to burn out my drill.

More to follow.

so i got all the stuff to do this today :D i plan on working on it tomorrow. since i got 2 "D" clevis for christmas and a custom made heavy duty tow strap i figure i would quit being lazy and do this. i will post some pics when i am done and try to get some pics of the install. i sure wish i had a MIG welder at my house though. so i home my AC Arc welder will go the trick. i am a certified welder though and will have my associates soon though so this shouldnt be a problem any ways.

Gris, thanks for taking the time to share the info and pics, very much appreciated.

Today I picked up all the supplies I need and will work on the project as soon as I get a chance. I'll try to get some pics too and will post them.....I'll leave instructions out since I'm following yours....I picked up 2 3.5" drop hitches so they'll be perfect, I won't have to cut my bumper or anything.
Thanks again!!

So are the existing holes that you bolt into, are they like the holes for the rear receiver hitch? Will I have to retap them or is it a bold and nut type of situation? haha

They are existing holes that the factory MOPAR hooks go into. You will not have to re-drill them as they are 5/8" (I believe). The front bumper needs to come off and then you just bolt the new hooks/reciever contraption on. There is also a black cover that needs to be removed to gain access to the holes from the front. See pics below.

This is where the black cover was, where the wrench is sticking out of.

I cannot for the life of me find any 1 1/4" hitches that have more than like 2" drops, do I just need to go to walmart and order them or does somebody have a website where they got theirs? Thanks

Ok so a 2" receiver with a 3-4" drop will still work? Do you know if I will still have to add the extra stock ontop of the receiver that bolts to the unibody? Thanks

it should I cant see why it wouldnt work, but I dont know about the stock on top of the reciever I would think that it would make the whole system weaker and would rather just cut my bumper a little so I know its strong enough

This is much better than tow hooks.... Can anyone post photos of how the hitch bolts up from the underside?

Can someone show me a picture or a diagram or something what the 1" stock is used for? I can't picture it.

Also, how long does the tow arm have to be? I've found a whole bunch of different lengths..

Thanks!

Look at Gris' last pic, you see the hitch receiver with a bolt through it....the 1" stock is welded onto the receiver, that's the part actually up against the frame. It's used to lower the receiver so it lines up with the openings in the front bumper....I'm I making any sense?
