does anyone know how this will fit a 05+ bumper?

I was wondering the same thing. I know the configuration on my 06 Limited is different than the one in the pictures. I would need to trim the plastic bumper in order for it to work on mine but I was also wondering in the hole pattern in the frame is the same as the ones in this project. I know I wouldn't put a lot of trust in those "m" bolts that come with stock tow hooks but maybe they would fail before doing major harm to the flimsy frame if using this mod under extreme conditions. I know anytime using recovery points, you must exercise caution though.

The hole pattern on the frame is indeed the same. The only thing different is where they would exit the bumper cover (you will probably need to trim something, as you stated)

would these work

http://www.justforjeeps.com/ballmountkits3.html

i see a 1 inch drop, a 2 1/4 drop a 2 3/4 drop and a 5 1/4 drop

reason i ask is i have a 50 dollar gift cert to j4j's which for 2 would leave me payin 10 some dollars for the 2 ballmounts then i'd have to do the drillin and dig through my crap for the rings

those look to be class 3, which is a 2" square, the 1.25'' is preffered.

is this the class II you're refering to and would it work for this mod?

thats the one. you need about a 3" drop IIRC. just go out to your jeep and measure from the center of the bolt holes in the frame rail, to the center of the opening in the bumper cut out. and thats your drop.

hmm, those only show a 2 1/4 rise, which is a drop if you turn it the other way the 2 1/4 rise is the only one they have listed for the class II , i emailed them and asked if they happened to have any others, im havin another wrenchathon this weekend, ill make some measurements then

really appreciate the help with this, its something i'd def like to get right the first time :)

the other thing your going to need is 1 1/4" steel square stock, otherwise your going to have to hack up your bumper.

yepyep, i have everything else in the list, was just tryin to find a cheep way to get the ball mounts

looks like i won't be getting them from justforjeeps, i emailed them askin if they had any other class II's and they don't just that one which I doubt will center in the hole correctly plus i sorta question the strength of that hitch they have

thanks for the help, i hope to get this done over the weekend

argh im getting annoyed trying to find these Class II 3 1/2 inch drops

it's 3 inches from the centerline of the outside 2 holes to the center of current tow hook , an additional 1/2 inch would center it

i think while im rambling around tryin to find an even decent buy on the mounts, i'm going to fab up a plate which will bridge from the 2 outside holes to the inside single hole, then weld the mount to the plate

would provide a similar baseplate stability that the oem tow hook had

i'm about >< close to just using a 2in

hahaha Whhhaat?

isn't that beautiful redhead your wife ramble? (i'm horrible at keeping people straight in my head)

what does your wife think about you breaking your tow hook trying to pull out some fat redneck girl who got her leg stuck in some mud?

when I make the plates I'll make a few sets, i'm half chimp with a torch but i'm king with a grinder, a sandblaster and the same can of 1500F stove pipe paint i've had in my toolbox for 15 years

got a can of rust shield something or other i used to paint my rear diff cover too, would probably resist scratches better, that 1500F paint scratches pretty easy on second thought I won't paint the extras because you'd need to weld the mount to them

it may be my project for tomorrow if i'm able to aquire some decent steel, might go raid the recycle dump for it

by the way, anyone know if the inch square steel stock he used was solid or hollow? formulating a plan B should i be unable to aquire suitable inch plate

Author:  KJ kyle [ Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:02 pm ]
Post subject:

its actually 1 1/4" square stock, and i know i used solid. for the ammount your using i think the extra couple bucks is worth the insurance

i couldn't come up with any solid anything today, the custom steel shop was closed, they typically have the cheepest steel around here, home depot didnt have anything solid either couldn't even get a decent thickness of flat bar either

i did get some inch square tube but that's for something else entirely so i'm still hunting for the solid bar which ticks me off cause I was ready to do this today

Here are some pics of my new recovery points. I used the 1 1/4 class II, (1 1/4 drop / 3/4 rise) mounted on there sides with 1/2 plate spacer between body and hitch. With time and planning was able to use a drimmel to cut out holes in bumper to fit nice and tight.

Finished product W/O D Rings. I used a 7/8 step bit to open up hole so i can use a 3/4 D ring

looks like they'll work good, out of curiosity was there a reason you decided to flip them out instead of in?

the steel for mine should show up sometime towards teh middle/end of the week so i should get to do mine this comming weekend

as a bonus with them flipped out instead of in, you've got room to tuck another set of fogs in the oem hook holes :D
