I agree that it would look more Jeepy with some round headlights. Boxyness was a Jeep trait before it was a Hummer trait though. The Patriot actually has some of the styling right with the boxy design and round headlights, but if you made the Liberty look like that too, the lineup would be even blurrier!

I think the discussion of the KK now compared to the KJ then is on two different levels. When the KJ came out it was against the biggest tradition of all in Jeeps (except a very few tries in the past)...Straight Axles front and rear. I DO understand that arguement from other Jeepers. Also, Jeep(DC) was the one touting the fact that the Liberty was the "replacement" for the Cherokee. I never saw it that way...the Cherokee was finally getting retired and the Liberty was a new Jeep from the ground up.

I have to say I don't like the front lights. It looks like they messed up with the fender flares again too. I think it should have lights like the Cherokee and go back to the Cherokee name. I'll have to test drive one before passing judgment though. I actually hated the way the Liberty looks from the front so much that if I had disliked anything else about it back in '01, I wouldn't have bought it. I started looking at ways to change it during the week it took me to decide to buy it after I saw my very first KJ on the dealer's lot when I was at the dealership to get the power window fixed in my '98 Cherokee.

It is ok. I don't care for the Nitro looking front though.

Maybe they should have discontinued the liberty name and called it something else like the Jeep Subordinate? They didn't try to pass the liberty off as the newly remodeled Cherokee, so why pass that off as the liberty?

well, to me it's like how chevy would change the camaro (i was a camaro geek for a long time & have owned many until i caught the jeep bug) & classify it into generations. the 67-69 was the first, 70-81 was the 2nd, 82-92 the 3rd & 93-02 the 4th. all VERY different looking cars & all very much a camaro. i think it's cool when they change styles & it always takes a while to get used to it. we all can consider ours the first generation 02-07 liberty. personally i like the new 08 liberty, i drove one yesterday & it's really alot nicer in person inside & out but i do like the styling of my 04 renny better & will keep it a long time. maybe the third generation liberty will be even cooler, i can't wait!!! :D

It probably will be. The reason for that now is due to the Subaru Liberty over seas. That won't change with the new styling.

I'm interested to see what the mid-generation changes will be. Honestly I never much noticed the KJ til I saw an '05 Renegade at work. Even though I didn't set out specifically to buy a Renegade (although my Renegade being the last 4x4 KJ on Oahu would lead to that) I definatly noticed them and started looking at KJs as a whole.

The Grand Cherokee resembles its former self. The lines are similar from front to back, it looks similar across the front grill area.

You can't really compare the KJ to the KK, they don't look alike. You could do a better job of comparing an XJ to the KK. But then again it is my opinion.

Jeep isn't the only car company to put out a new model and have it met with criticism from the hardcore owners. It isn't about pleasing those who are going to buy your product anyways, it is about acquiring new customers. It is much easier to convince loyal owners that the "new" model isn't so bad than it is to convince an other brand owning customer that the model that has been around for a few years is the way to go.

Would I buy one? Probably not, but I just got my KJ anyways. When I'm in need of a new car in 7-8 years would I consider one. Maybe, afterall, I'm already on my 3rd Jeep and I can't beat the value (Jeep name, 4x4, pricing).

The news is that New Chrysler will cut deep in the Jeep range.
2 models will be skiped soon: Commander and Compass.
The Liberty/Cherokee will be skiped in 2 or 3 years. (Nitro too)
Only the Wrangler, Patriot and GC will survive.
So enjoy the KK when it is still there!

I can see them doing that, of course some sort of Wrangler will always be around as well as a Grand of sorts, then they can fill in with a Patriot/ current Liberty sized vehicle and be good. Right now they are testing to see what the Patriot/Compass/ KJ/KK will do and then dump what doesnt work or sell well, doesnt matter what people like its what people think they have to have and that is something newer than the Joneses down the street. I can see them also trying some sort of "pickup" in the near future for a limited run, just hope they make it big enough

I like it.

Also, I think if they're going to cut models in the future, the Compass will be on that list. I say the Wrangler (and the new pickup version "JT"), GC, Liberty and Patriot remain.

I am all about change, and I am always looking for the new models, I first hated the four door Wrangler, but noow I love it. 08 Liberty though is going the way of the Patriot and the Commander as far as design. It doesnt appear to me as "rugged". I assume it will be trail rated but I dont think it will be able to do the same things the current KJ can do. We shall see, if anyone test drives or rides in one on the trail post it! let us know. Oh man but the interior looks very cheap (just like a Dodge!). The roof option is awesome (full retractable soft top) BUT I have used my roof for canoes (couldnt in that) and what about gear baskets? I guess you would have to skip that cool option

can you see the retractable tops after three to 5 years looking like an old ragtop convertible flapping in the breeze. Still think they are going the wrong route, I know they are trying to get more customers but what it is doing to the name Jeep is cutting it down

Oh heavens no, I love the soft top Wranglers. I just know you can still throw a canoe on a Wrangler because of the roll bars. The Liberty doesnt have anything, good point though. I still love the option and I would just have to weigh the pros and cons. I still like my KJ better.

OK, so someone needs to put on a suit, go down to a stealership and test drive one. Convince them to let you take it out w/o a salesman and hit the first trail you can find!! Whale the cr@p out of it, wash it then bring it back. Then report in here!!! :D

Oh, and that inside is so square edged it looks like it was either computer generated on a low raster machine or chopped out of a block of styrofoam! :x
