There is a transmisison setting similar to a 4-low on the Freedom Drive 2 systems.

Thats the bad part... Patriots are more of an all wheel drive system with an available 4x4 hi lock... no low lock available no real transfer case at all.

Kind of makes me wish I had independent suspension all the way around. My ground clearance is 8" at my rear shock mounts and 8.5" at my rear dif :(

So you must just have the Freedom Drive 1 since you said you're still getting something like 27.5 mpg. I know the Freedom Drive 2 with the low range doesn't get that kind of mileage.

That is actually the model of Patriot I would go with since you can lift it. I don't really need 4WD low on my Liberty, but I do need the clearance. So you got good clearance now, AWD, 4-Hi lock, good gas mileage, and it looks good.

I dig it.

must not be "Trail Rated" with that kind of mileage :D I looked a tthose when they first came out and the TR versions only were rated for like 18-21 highway and I can get that with my KJ! 8)

Your all correct, its not trail rated... however it is "trail tested"... something most trail rated models won't be able to say... It's a Freedom Drive I model since it has a 5speed (only way to get a manual tranny). As for the tires, I have an appointment the middle of this week to get it aligned after that I'll mount the tires. So look for those pictures near the end of the week.

One step closer!

Today I mounted my tires... Yup the 245/65R17 Fuzion XTI All Terrain Tires. Ok so they do rub ever so slightly but only at a full hard lock and its on a piece of thin sheet metal that I think I can actually beat out of the way... or I am also pretty sure that a .25" wheel spacer would move the wheels out far enough to cure the issue to if necessary.

Here's some quick shots:

Nice work mate
I actually looks like it should come from the factory like that. Great set up.... and they laughed at me when I put a 50mm lift and bigger tyres on my RAV4. Best thing I ever did and made it a very capable off road vehicle (no centre diff lock either).

Looks hot, now go get some mud and post some pics doing it.

Yes, there is a cubby hole under the liftable floor in the cargo area where a 205/65R17 is stuffed... which at the time of purchase was an almost full size spare. However now that I am running larger tires I plan on buying a 5th 17" alloy wheel, a 5th matching tire, and a roofrack with wheel mount. Then throwing it up on the roof so I have a full size spare again.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but your comment about the expected amount of clearance vs. what you actually got.....under the axle or diff, youre not gonna net the amount of suspension lift there. you'll get that under your wheel wells, but not under the diffs...you need taller tires for that. i lifted my KJ 3", and 2" taller tires....got 4" lift under the wheel wells, but only an inch or so under the pumpkins

The Patriot is a full independent suspension rig so he will gain the same amount under the diffs. :)

The rear tire on the back is a failry recent addition in the Jeep time-line. They hung off of the sides of CJ's for awhile, but the majority of the Jeep models did not have it.

That being said, I think it really adds a nice look to have the spare on the outside, and does make it easier to get to ( especially of you have a flat off-road.)
