Good question above. Take a look in the Fabrication section at a thread titled something about $29.00 cross rails. A very good cheap idea that I'm making also.

No cross rails needed for the Defender rack, just 4 U-bolts hold it on,2 each roof rail.Never had a problem yet.

I updated the link in my post (had it going to the wrong page). The Garvin rack comes with all the hardware you need to mount it on the existing roof rails - basically a set of four clamps that go on the rails. I'll try posting a pic of the mounts asap...

Yakima Load warrior, Yakima low rider feet and 48inch cross bars, one of the best looking systems I think and is very pricey. All together it was around 750.00 with everything.

Surco, probably the smallest they make. Mounted as cheaply as I could.

Here is mine, the Black Widow with wind deflector. I love it, sturdy and cheap too at $99. http://www.discount-trailers.com/roof_rack.htm

is the black widow pretty stout? or does it feel as if it is a little bit flimsy?

The thing is really solid. I just carried over 100 lbs of firewood up there, a tent, a tool box, folding chairs and a small cooler no problem. We were shaking them up really good at Mammoth Cave. Its light too, only 25lbs

I know I must have one of the largest roof-racks anyone has put on their KJ. It is rather cumbersome, but holds more than I ever need to carry, which is usually at least 100 lbs of firewood, a 10 gallon water container, cooler, and the usual camping gear with 1/3 the rack to spare. I also pitch my tent up there. I need to get pics of it loaded up for camping and with the tent set-up on top. It's nice to be able to carry the gear of my friends when we go camping...frees up room for more ladies 8)

At first, it wasn't. The rack only bent when I stood on the front end, I found out  I put large up U-bolts on both sides, positioned right by each door. It's not the greatest fix, but it's worked so far. I'm waiting for some real hardware up there  so I can mount the rack securely enough to hold it's actual cargo rate of 500 lbs.
