Diamond plate front bumper

Upon cutting the center section of your front bumper out, you find that behind the plastic, is more plastic shock absorber/filler. Behind that, you will find an insulated cord (fog lights I think) and then simply, solid frame. Mounting this plating was very easy, and it's solid as a rock. I am going to mount generic tow hooks to the top of the plating, bolting through the frame like I did with the plating. I went to a local dealer and looked at how the Mopar hooks mounted, and we will essentially be mounting the hooks on the opposite side of the frame that the Mopar hooks attach to,

brpn#1, what looks so bad? I know the uneven bottom edge could look a lot straighter, but I haven't grinded it yet. Cutting through 1/4" diamond plate is pretty difficult. I think it looks pretty sweet, and with tow hooks up top very soon and later a winch, I think it'll look bad@$%.

How about extending it lower and bending it under to act as a front skid..............? :idea:

Dude likes it, so what's the big deal? I don't like paper mache brush guards, but you won't see me rag somebody for wanting one on their ride. To each their own...that's how I roll.

I have another plate with a lip in it. It was measured for going to the back of the plate I have on the front to the front crossmember. I have yet to even look into attaching this, because I still don't have the stock front diff skid. I want to get that on there, and then see how/where I can attach it.

I was thinking of painting the diamond plate jet black. Any other opinions? I need to paint it something, so as to not let it rust. I was also thinking of maybe painted my front bumper black. I guess I'm just hasty to go two-tone on my paint job.

Consider painting it with bed liner protectant. It's pretty tuff and will handle the beating, and I think it looks mean.

My dad originally said chrome would look good. I said black. Then he agreed black when we got it mounted. Then I looked at the remaining bumper and grill area, and thought it would all look good painted black. Like I said earlier, I'm hasty to go two-tone, but I'm not sure it is such a wise decision.

I've been tempted many a time to call a local Line-X or Rhino Lining place (if there are any!?) to find out how much it would cost to cover sides of the KJ body, or bumpers, or even the flares. I'm sure I could get a coating on this plating, but I don't think it's necessary, protection wise. It's diamond plating...this stuff is tuff! I was just thinking the other day, "if this is what my skid plates where made out of, I'd never worry!"

My biggest problem with it's look is the uneven bottom edge. I will tackle that next weekend. I'm thinking I may cut it even (and straight :roll:

) with the plate behind it.

I think it would look great if you extended it toward the wheels on a 45 degree angle like a front skid plate. But just straightening it might help

ever heard of being honest? thats what i said.. IMO = in my opinion.. everyone is welcome to their own opinion... and again i state that it looks harsh.. maybe when its all done it will look better.. right now it looks like metal bolted to the bumper.. am i missing something? its his KJ he can do what he wants.. doesnt change my opinion..

dude.. nothing against ya or anything.. just when i saw it what i said was the first thing that came to my mind. chrome plated would look nice.. like i said.. IMO it looked f-ed up.. maybe it will look better when you are done.. didnt mean to bash ya or anything.. i just now went back and looked at your car domain pics.. what actually happened to your front bumper in the first place? btw.. what are u using to cut the diamond plate.. when my dad and I built a rear gate for a trailer.. we tried everything to cut thru it.. finally got a metal cutting blade for circular saw.. cuts like butta.. of course sparks everywhere..

I tend to agree.

I love the diamond plate look, but it only works if it's done throughout. You have the rounded bumper above and to both sides of the diamond plate, so it looks a little weird. If you find a way to fab up the entire bumper like that, that could look pretty sweet, tho! Good work!

brpn#1, it was just your choice of words. Good to see it worked out.

I think if you bent it downward where the bumper turns down (to conform to the bumper itself all the way to underneath) it would look cool as heck. Right now, it does seem a little "off" with it "sticking out". Good to see someone trying something different though!

agreed. find a bench break and have the bottom portion bent under to better match the curve of the bumper. 2 bends across the width of the diamond plate piece would do it.

also, find some black carriage bolts to smooth out the front
