Post subject:  bad weekend for the libby :(

i was heading down to mohican this weekend to go camping with the company i work for. and im an hour from home, half hour from the campsite. and my jeep just stalls, oil light comes on. look in my book, says that light means low oil pressure, im like wtf? oil pump? ran out of oil somehow? i get out, look at the oil, 1500 miles on it, real clean, perfect level. trannys ok, no leaks anywhere. i try starting it, wont start. maybe let it cool down even though it was normal temps. try starting it again... same thing, just turns over but wont fire, and if it does fire its only while the key is starting it and only goes up to 500rpm's then let off the key and it dies off. try giving it gas this time, it starts, but runs REAL rough and is tempermental on whether it wants to stay running or just die down and stall again. little convenient store im parked in front of calls her friend mechanic thats down the street. he comes takes a look. says its a headgasket, some liquid and black smoke it comin out the exhaust while its running. probably antifreeze, but not sure, what else could it be? little oily, but no real color to it.

my dad ended up coming down to check it out. so i ended up having it towed back home, tow truck driver followed my dad to the dealer and dropped it off and they will check it out monday, my friend that was already at the campsite still came and picked me up so i can still camp.

i bought it used, but bought an extended warranty on it. so im not sure if the towing is a $50 deductible, or they pay $50 and i have to pay the rest? but everything mechanical is covered, so thats good.

it just figures, but the weekend was still fun, went canoeing, cooked out, campfire, fun weekend except for the whole incident lol

That sucks.Just be weary if the aftermarket warrenty is not from Chrysler then they will most likely screw you over saying something was your fault and not pay the repair bill which you will have to pay upfront first then try to get reimbursed :( .

yea thats whats im afraid of. i guess ill see how everything goes this week after a lot of phone calls and hopefully me not getting pissed off for getting screwed over, cross my fingers

it was just wierd becuase there were no warning signs what so ever. it just stalled as i crossed the intersection. no prior dashwarning lights, no wierd running or starting issues. wierd.

it will start, but you gotta push the gas a little while turning it over but its REAL rough running, little pinging, and oily black smoke watery stuff coming out the exhaust. but might or might not stall out when i tried to move it around.

WATER PUMP, check the water pump, my PT Cruiser water pump just went out last night and I had all those same symptoms....check the water pump....

Also have them check your catalytic convertors, might be something with them there, I remember b4 mine went out on my KJ there was some oily residue coming out the exhaust but not really any black smoke...

so those 2 things sound like a good thing to check in my book...

alright, hopefully its something like that. and no major damage was done. i didnt let it run long or drive it around a lot. just enough to show the mechanic guy that helped what it was doing. and to move it across the street into a parking lot.

usually a bad head gasket would cause the oil to be a milky color but you said it was perfect and level. So i dont think its the headgasket, and cars will still run and drive with a blwon headgasket. Crappy and will eventually die but will still run if it just happend

yea it was running crappy, like it was misfiring or something. just real rough. i checked the oil dipstick a few times and didnt see anything odd in the oil, just clean oil at the correct level.

Rayman....This is gonna sound a little strange and offbase, but how old is your battery? You said it stalled and then the oil light came on,well if one stalls from a bad cell in the battery or an altenator not charging properly you could see alot of irratic gauges and the computer will go into "Limp Mode"causing some pretty sick drivability.I had a Mopar battery changed 3 times in the first year of service with my Dodge Dakota. At times it would crank and start just fine, but it would then soon die due to a shorted cell in the battery.DC's electrical circuts are very sensitive to low voltage,so while this may be just wishful thinking, don't rule it out.(Fingers Crossed)

the battery seemed perfectly fine. it cranked over the same as it normally would the whole time i was trying to figure out what was wrong with it. so who knows, keep the thoughts comin! lol ill figure out whats wrong either tomorrow or sometime this week from the dealer.

but no, i havent changed the battery and dont know if it has ever been changed. never really payed attention to what battery it is lol

oh and thanks guys, this is why i love this site!!! lol

Just a rule of thumb:Bad head gasket=coolant in oil, cracked head=oil in the coolant.Again just a rule of thumb, not set in stone as some vehicles are just strange, seen oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil and no bad head gasket or cracked head, cracked block.

hey if its something like that, that would be SWEET if i get a new engine out of this whole deal! lol i can only hope haha. cant wait to hear from the dealer to see what it really was that happened

but if it was coolant, wouldnt the oily clear/carbon liquid coming/spraying out of the exhaust be red? it seemed clear, yet lots of carbon, black smoke and water coming out of the exhaust

If your burning coolant it's not going to come out of the exhaust the same color it is in the raditor.Might want to check your coolant level,if it's low your burning coolant.

the coolant is low. the guy that helped me checked it and said it was low. thats why he said he thinks its the headgasket but he wasnt sure. but it never overheated or anything. just shut right off out of nowhere

could be the water pump too as I mentioned b4, whenm it went in my PT last night all the coolant was drained from the reservoir and my Dad refilled it and drove it home but even b4 he got home all the coolant was used up and the engine shut itself off into some sort of safe mode to keep the engine from getting too hot and breaking anything internally....at least we hope that is what happened...I still don't know why my dad didn't get it towed...o well...

NEW NEWS!!!!

the jeep dealer called my house today, i guess my jeep is still covered under chryslers warranty....and.....IM GETTING A BRAND NEW ENGINE!!! i just have to pay a $100 deductable. i am not sure what was wrong with it, as they talked to my mom while i was at work. but yea, i dont have to deal with the aftermarket warranty. and chrysler might pay the tow bill too, but not positive, im gonna try, since i was 1hour from home and what else was i supposed to do but have it towed, and it was $270 to have it towed, and for the guy to drive back home which is 2 hours there and back.

well good to know your getting an ew engine, but would like to know what was so severe that led to that having to happen????

Not a water pump i assume, unless it was and caused an internal issue with the block or rods, etc....

wow man, I just read this whole topic and thats crazy! at least you had fun in mohican anyway. where did you camp? what did you do? any canoing now or is the river high?

glad to hear everything is gonna turn out ok, also curious to know what the heck happened!! it would have sucked if you would have gotten rid of the jeep before i even got to see it!

hehe nah i cant get rid of this thing, i love it! i wish i coulda got a 08 rubicon as a rental, but i gotta be 25!! lol SUCKS!! ill figure out what was wrong with it when i pick it up. they said 4 days, but i told em take their time because i have my honda to drive that i havent driven for 6 months, plus it gets better gas milage, twice to be exact lol

and yea, on saturday we cooked out for lunch, set up our tents, cooked out for dinner, had a bonfire. and the next morning cooked out again, then went canoeing. the river was perfect hieght, shallow to be honest. but it was really nice, couldnt have asked for better weather down there either
