Post subject:  Kennebec Pass (La Plata Canyon) Durango, CO

Went and did a little exploring this past saturday with some buddies and found some incredible camping spots and scenery. As you could guess we're gettin the crew together to go camping next weekend. Great place just out 160 past Durango West. This area is still active with mining for the gold that wasn't found in the 1900s, back when La Plata City was bigger than Durango. Atleast until Durango received the Narrow Gauge Railroad.
So here are some shots...dont have a lot of flexing shots because i was both driver and photographer. This is doable in a stock KJ, however the last leg of the trail will prove to be a challenge to anyone with stock tires. I will get to the top of the pass this weekend because we ran out of time on our previous run.

afternoon storm rolling in.

some mining equipment...the crane and the unimog both still had snow chains on. unimog was unlocked but no keys

this giant wine barrel is actually a 4 person sauna...pretty sweet!

Near timberline...you can see the summit of Kennebec Pass cizzled out of the rock at the very top of the picture if you follow the pine trees in the middle of the picture...thats my goal for next weekend...

Where we came from...

Active Mine...we crawled in mybe 50 yards...not safe in the least bit to do but what a rush...

I grew up in Ohio....here I am in Colorado. But....I do miss the reds and oranges of Fall. SE Ohio rocks in that department. Go visit Ohio U in Athens in a couple weeks.

RkyMtnKJ....I wish that was still a wine casket and full of it. That would make for a fun dip.

Me too, wait I'm in Colorado now :-)

I do miss all the great people to wheel with in Ohio and a few other things, but overall I wouldn't go back.
