Donkeykong....what would be the cheapest setup that would enable me to do decent HDR photography.

definitely makes it look like CGI, colors are off of what they are in actuality, but still looks awesome

Are you talking hardware, software or both? Depending on what your hardware is, the software side can run anywhere from free to $$$. If you want to PM me I think I can get you some info to get started. I did this one last year:

I think I'll go out this weekend and try to get some more shots to work with. My D50 will do bracketed exposures, I've just never played around with it.

Great shots Donkykong, love that sort of look. Can you do it on a standard digital camera or do you need a special camera?

We had some photo's like that taken at my wedding, looked great.

I use this all the time in my 3D animations....killer look for realism.

Thanks for bringing this technique to my attention. I'm sure it will develop into an addiction in the future. I can't wait to get up north and get some HDR shots now. I've been reading about it and for anyone interested here is the link to Photomatix free trial software. I was amazed at how easy it is to start(although I'm sure it takes alot of practice for those spectacular shots): http://www.hdrsoft.com/
I have a digital camera that's almost four years old and even it can be used to make HDR shots. Although with no autobracketing it is definitely a little harder. Maybe Santa will help me out in that department? Thanks for the idea though.

FYI: I don't know if the merge to HDR is a feature in photoshop elements, but I know that it's on the full blown CS3, but I ended up getting a copy of corel paint shop photo pro X2 from best buy after they price matched the advertised price of comp USA for $49.99. Personally I tried both versions of photoshop and find corels software easier to use, but that's just me....

As far as the camera, I have a digital rebel and I use the auto-bracketing to take three different exposures to create my HDR images, other than a camera that you can vary shutter speeds (and f-stopps), a tri-pod is almost crucial to allow the images to line up properly.

And by the way, sorry for the really slow delay, I'm in the process of moving house, and the internet got shut off a week early due to a clerical error of time warner :roll:

I don't know about Photoshop Elements either, but I have CS2 which has the 'Merge to HDR' tool. There is also a plugin for GIMP which will produce HDR images. I actually find it easier to just do layers with gradient masks in between to merge them, but I'm going to continue to try using the CS2 tool and see if it gets any better.

I think that I tried photomatix, but I went to download.com and tried out photoshop elements, CS3 (or is it 2?) and the corel paint shop pro photo X2, and I liked the corel the most. Each bit of software gives you a free 30 day trial.
