OK so the season is approaching and these pages will be full of teasers from the area of LJS 09... today was a little further south by Durango but has the same feel to it.

I was flying solo on this trip so the exploring of the back roads had to be cut short. Started things off on a lovely day after some afternoon rain.

Image

Headed up to see if the pass was open as it's a pretty good indicator of what things are doing up in Ouray.

Image

Got distracted by a couple of side trails that didn't seem to end... I need a trail buddy to go check those out... anyone?

Image

Image

Plenty of old mining equipment scattered around...

Image

The shelf road up to Kennebec Pass (check out the manmade notch in the mountain for the road)

Image

Heading up...

Image

Chilling at the top... and yes that's a very big cliff just in front of me.

Image

The trail turns into a bike path from here and you have to turn around.... not a bad view on the way down though.

Image

Well now the Jeep is dirty and happy... was a good day of playing.

It's nothing special but here's a quick 360 from near the top... I'll warn you, it's shaky haha.

Pretty much everything west of the front range is like that. Right on the front range its a mix of hills and valleys, and east of it is the plains.

Only the mountains. From Denver (along I-25) going East, it is prairie land.

Snow is not a big deal. It snows, it melts...FAST! At least below the mountains. Just put one location choice, Denver, and you are in. LOL!

Anyways.....

Let's stay on topic though. No more hijacking.

From what I have seen, that is what Ouray is like, not too many hardcore trails.

The Ouray area is tuned more for site seeing,it's very appealing for the views and small town feel without the need for a more then built rig to see some spectacular views. You need to go north some for the harder trails(with easy trails also) with views also. The Grand Junction,Idaho Springs, and Boulder area is where most of the hard trails are.

Hey durangotang, i just did this trail 3 days ago with my parents in town. A lot less snow, but many more palygmists (so i think). there were 2 trucks with 2 men and over 10 women! They did the whole trail with the women sitting in the back of their pickup! Its much more steeper than it seems... Back on the front range now though...
