Does anyone have some pics of a KJ with the spare in a roof rack? instead of the tailgate, and when you did it how much of a MPG loss did you get?

thanks

I had 4 MTRs up there and lost abot 1.5 miles per gallon on a 250 mile trip if that helps, have ran just my regular spare up there without hardly any loss, but I do have a good size deflector in front of my basket so it helps some

I know this isn't what you asked for jsc, but I wouldn't put my tire on my roof because of the weight. Not that the roof can't handle it or rack but the KJ weighs a ton already and having more weight up there just means more lean than I want when I am off road. I had my roof rack up there with a hi lift, shovel, axe, and 2 full NATO cans and did some wheeling and then took it off and went wheeling and noticed a good difference in the lean (less of it) after the weight was gone off the top. I try and keep my weight as low to the ground as I can, adding a tire to the top only makes that worse. Just my 2 pesos.

ya Im going to throw it up on my rack, but I dont know where else to put it but it doesnt fit on my tire carrier any more bc I made my own rear hitch that is up as high as it can I hade to cut the stock bumper to get it to fit and plus I dont really want the weight of a 31" tire on the tailgate its just gonna make it wear worse

hey Tom how tall is your deflector?

What kind of rack and deflector do you have Tom? I think the biggest draw back to me doing this is that I would have to park outside :(

So what did you do to your rear bumper? Got any pics? Is it still the stock bumper but modified or is it a new rear bumper?

well I made my own and I like it but its too heavy for me, it weighs some where around 120-130# so I put my stock bumper back on and Im in the process of trying to get the hitch I made off, so I can install it with the stock bumper but Ill need to cut off about the bottom 3" of the stock bumper to make it all fit, but I think it will look killer bc it will increase my departure angle from any other hitch and it has 2 clevis tabs for shackles

when I have the hitch on I need a 6" drop ball mount and its still a little too high

yes pictures, I have had the saw in my hand about a dozen times laying under the rear bumper thinking" I should just start cutting about right here! Sooner or later it will be shorter ( after I see jsc's  ) unless he really messes it up

haha thanks Tom! Ive have been wondering about cutting it to make the whole thing shorter but I dont know how good it would look, so for right now Im just gonna cut out where the hitch goes

I might need to to make it look good I dont know, and I think I may have been wrong on the departure angle but its definitly up higher than the other hitches

what do you think should I use it and cut the bumper up I was hoping that the bumper would cover up a lot of it but I dont have a clue

ya I know what you mean when I first got the KJ I added a hitch and it would always hit so I made this and it is 4 or 5" higher than the one I had.

Tom how tall is your wind deflector on your roof rack? I have been thinking about adding a peice of 2" strap at the front of mine for that
