last night i almost had an accident going up my driveway/private road.. we have an area that is on a north slope and we had about 4" of snow last week then about 2-3" of ice/freezing raing.. all week it was fine i was able to keep my momentem and go up and down w/no problems but another neighbor in a older cherokee tried to go up last night *it got to 8 degrees yesterday* and it was all 2" of ice.. so when i came home about 6:30pm.. it looked fine.. guess again.. black ice.. i got half way up and slide all the way down.. i had to cut it to the left and run into a bank to stop myself from sliding down into her cherokee which she slid down out of the way.. i turned around w/no problems and started to go down this slight hill when all of a sudden i slide to the left and came 3" from going over the side.. the cliff below drops about 30ft and there are some small trees.. so it was too dark and cold to try to do anything.. we were all slipping around so had to leave it all night until this morning and let it refreeze then the neighbor put down some sawdust and twigs.. we backed it back and i now got it parked safe.. so today I just ordered a reese front hitch and i am going to get a winch and receiver plate in a few weeks after christmas so i can put the winch in the front or back.. i could of pulled it out with the winch last night.. for now i am parking near the road.. no snow/ice there.. and walking up with trekking poles to our house..

be careful out there.. even though our KJ's are 4x4 and all that.. ice doesnt care about that

ICe Sucks. Snow sucks. How about just salting/sanding your driveway? Then again, I'm guessing you have a crazy long driveway?

would chains have made any difference in that? or studded snow tires?

I like the ribbon......crazy story though bro! I used to drive snowplows and salter trucks when I worked for the City, and on the country routes it was common for us to slide down backwards in those big dump trucks down steep hills and sometimes forwards...very scary! Glad to see the KJ and XJ came out unscathed...oh yeah, and glad no is hurt also.....I have to get my priorities in order!

Yes. Now why didn't I think of that?
(Must be because I have only seen snow/ice a few times in the last ten years...thank goodness)

IIRC, didnt you say a while back you had a really long driveway? That must be a killer walk in that kinda cold. And I agree, ice SUCKS. All we've had this year have been ice storms and i've slid quite a few times....but I will say, over the stock goodyears, better tires do make a noticeable difference.....you dont slide AS much....lol

hmmmmm even with good tires you will still slid......i can never forget about two weeks ago going to pick up my friend and did not know her road was covered with ice. As I turned, the KJ spun around about 3 times....as I was waiting for the KJ to stop skidding I was hoping not to hit a tree on the side of the road.....scary flashbacks.....I guess no matter how good your tires are, as long as there is no traction, you cant win

......and enter ESP.....its been great on my 06 Renny, and any situation I think I would have slid in so far has been avoided due to the ESP system....it makes a funny noise when it engages, but thats a small price to pay to stay stuck to the road.

Oh, ok. I thought it was sort of a recurring theme with that driveway, and I was thinking of ways to prevent having to park at the end of the driveway and trek up. But if snow like that is rare, there's really no point in going all out, there's not all that much the jeep can't do on its own for as rare an occassion as it is.

momentum in the key in snow driving, and not locking up the brakes. ICE UNDER SNOW is really tricky. Chains are the only option and at that still a challenge. 4x4, ABS, TCS this that won't do jack. need something to tear that ice up and get traction. Chains, shovels and tow ropes/winch.

drive safe.
